Lord Kṛṣṇa is the beloved son of mother Yaśodā; the transcendental lover in the land of Vraja; the delight of Gokula; Kāna [a nickname of Kṛṣṇa]; the wealth of the lives of the gopīs. He steals the mind of even Cupid and punishes the Kāliya serpent. (1)

amala harinām amiya-vilāsā
vipina-purandara, navīna nāgara-bora,
baḿśī-badana suvāsā ||2||

These pure, holy names of Lord Hari are full of sweet, nectarean pastimes. Kṛṣṇa is the Lord of the twelve forests of Vraja, He is ever-youthful and is the best of lovers. He is always playing on a flute, and He is an excellent dresser. (2)

braja-jana-pālana, asura-kula-nāśana
nanda-godhana-rākhowālā
govinda mādhava, navanīta-taskara,
sundara nanda-gopālā ||3||

Kṛṣṇa is the protector of the inhabitants of Vraja; the destroyer of various demoniac dynasties; the keeper and tender of Nanda Mahārāja’s cows; the giver of pleasure to the cows, land, and spiritual senses; the husband of the goddess of fortune; the butter thief; and the beautiful cowherd boy of Nanda Mahārāja. (3)

yāmuna-taṭa-cara, gopī-basana-hara,
rāsa-rasika, kṛpāmoya
śrī-rādhā-vallabha, bṛndābana-naṭabara,
bhakativinod-āśraya ||4||

Kṛṣṇa wanders along the banks of the River Yamunā. He stole the garments of the young damsels of Vraja who were bathing there. He delights in the mellows of the rāsa dance; He is very merciful; the lover and beloved of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī; the great dancer of Vṛndāvana; and the shelter and only refuge of Ṭhākura Bhaktivinoda. Srutidharma Das opens the 50 Hour Kirtan event at Bhaktivedanta Manor by describing the benefits of chanting the Hare Krishna mantra.

Here is the transcript of the speech:

The heart, which has been covered by so many layers of dust over so many millions of lives, happens to be cleared. Just like our rooms, you know... if we leave them as they are and you go travelling, you come back, so much dust is there. You may not notice but your parents definitely notice. [laughter] Others notice… There’s a lot of dust in the room. So the dust is there, we need to clear it, so ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ [Śikṣāṣṭaka, Verse 1]. Clearing that dust.

Bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ. The second thing that happens when we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, the... the, uh... the blazing fire of material existence, it becomes extinguished. Means all the anxieties of daily life. So many anxieties... You’ll get rid of all them by sitting here for the next four days. Not only your heart will get cleansed, but all the anxieties of everyday life, they’ll disappear. Bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ.

Śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā. All good fortune will come in your life. All good fortune will appear within your life. Normally, life, uh... is generally an appointment with disappointments. [laughter] But here, it’s amazing, because Mahāprabhu is saying, śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā. All good fortune will come in your life.

Śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ vidyā-vadhū. All knowledge of the scriptures, they will enter your heart. They will enter your heart, simply by chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa. Millions and millions of scriptures, but all of that will enter within your heart simply by sitting here for the next four days.

Śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam / ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ. You will taste a bliss which you’ve never tasted. There is a bliss in chanting the holy name, and you can only taste it when you sit long enough here... It will finally come. And, uh... Prabhupāda describes the jaundice principle – that when you first chant, it’s not so nice, because medicine never is, but if you keep chanting, the real medicine will cure you and you’ll taste the sickness [sweetness]. Ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ.

And the next thing is... but it’s not just now: prati-padaṁ. At every stage of your life, you will chant the holy name... you’ll... you’ll taste that bliss... that happiness. Imagine that. People are happy for a few moments – have a drink, have this, have that – but it’s gone, next morning. But this bliss, it carries on and on and on. Prati-padaṁ. At every step.

Ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ / sarvātma-snapanaṁ. And finally, Mahāprabhu’s saying, it’s the bathing of the soul. This chanting is the bathing of the soul. Paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanam. That, all glories to the chanting of the holy name of Kṛṣṇa.

harer nāmaiva kevalam
kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva
nāsty eva gatir anyathā

[In this Age of Kali there is no other means, no other means, no other means for self-realisation than chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name of Lord Hari.]

Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is the son of the King of Vraja, became the son of Śacī [Lord Caitanya], and Balarāma became Nitāi. The holy name delivered all those souls who were lowly and wretched. The two sinners Jagāi and Mādhāi are evidence of this. (3)

hā hā prabhu nanda-suta, vṛṣabhānu-sutā-juta,
koruṇā karoho ei-bāro
narottama-dāsa koy, nā ṭheliho rāṅgā pāy,
tomā bine ke āche āmāra ||4||

O Lord Kṛṣṇa, son of Nanda, accompanied by the daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, please be merciful to me now. Narottama Dāsa says, "O Lord, please do not push me away from Your reddish lotus feet, for who is my beloved except for You?" (4)

Diwali is the day when Kṛṣṇa allowed Himself to be bound by the rope of His mother's love, thus earning Himself the name Dāmodara ("one whose belly is bound by rope"). The Dāmodarāṣṭakaṁ is a beautiful description of that pastime.

Here is the English translation:

To the Supreme Lord, whose form is the embodiment of eternity, knowledge, and bliss, whose glittering earrings are swinging to and fro, who is wonderfully manifest in the divine realm of Gokula, who [due to the offence of breaking the pot of yogurt that His mother was churning into butter and then stealing the butter that was kept hanging from a swing] is quickly running from the wooden grinding mortar in fear of mother Yaśodā, but who has been caught from behind by her who ran after Him with greater speed – to that Supreme Lord, Srī Dāmodara, I offer my humble obeisances. (1)

[Seeing the stick in His mother's hand,] He is crying and rubbing His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes are filled with fear, and the necklace of pearls around His neck, which is marked with three lines like a conch shell, is shaking because of His quick breathing due to crying. To this Supreme Lord, Srī Dāmodara, whose belly is bound not with ropes but with His mother's pure love, I offer my humble obeisances. (2)

By such childhood pastimes as this, He is drowning the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy, and is revealing to those devotees who are absorbed in knowledge of His supreme majesty and opulence that He is only conquered by devotees whose pure love is imbued with intimacy and is free from all conceptions of awe and reverence. With great love I again offer my obeisances to Lord Dāmodara hundreds and hundreds of times! (3)

O Lord, although You are able to give all kinds of benedictions, I do not pray to You for the boon of impersonal liberation, nor the highest liberation of eternal life in Vaikuṇṭha, nor any other boon [which may be obtained by executing the nine processes of bhakti]. O Lord, I simply wish that this form of Yours as Bāla Gopāla in Vṛndāvana may ever be manifest in my heart, for what is the use to me of any other boon besides this? (4)

O Lord, Your lotus face, which is encircled by curling locks of soft, blue-black hair, is kissed again and again by mother Yaśodā, and Your lips are reddish like the bimba fruit. May this beautiful vision of Your lotus face be ever manifest in my heart. Thousands and thousands of other benedictions are of no use to me. (5)

O Lord, I offer my obeisances unto You. O Dāmodara! O Ananta! O Viṣṇu! O Master, be pleased upon me. By showering Your glance of mercy upon me, deliver this poor ignorant fool who is immersed in an ocean of worldly sorrows, and become visible to my eyes. (6)

O Lord Dāmodara, just as the two sons of Kuvera, Maṇigrīva and Nalakūvara, were delivered from the curse of Nārada and made into great devotees by You in Your form as a baby tied with rope to a grinding mortar, in the same way, please give to me Your own prema-bhakti. I only long for this and have no desire for any kind of liberation. (7)

O Lord Dāmodara, I first of all offer my obeisances to the brilliantly effulgent rope which binds Your belly. I then offer my obeisances to Your belly, which is the abode of the entire universe. I humbly bow down to Your most beloved Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, and I offer all obeisances to You, the Supreme Lord, who displays unlimited pastimes. (8)

Holding grass between my teeth, O Lord Gaura, I am calling out to You now! Please be compassionate upon me and come to reside within the temple of my heart. (2)

If You do not give Your mercy, seeing how fallen I am, then why are You known as Patita Pāvana, the merciful Saviour of the fallen? (3)

I am plunged amidst the violent hurricane-stricken waves in the ocean of this material world, from which there is no escape. Kindly give me the gift of Your divine lotus feet, which are compared to a boat in which Your servant may cross over the ocean of birth and death. (4)

prārthanā karaye sadā narottama dāsa ||5||

This is a Rūpa Gosvāmī's song. [sings:]

rādhe jaya jaya mādhava-dayite
gokula-taruṇī-maṇḍala-mahite

[O Rādhā! O Mādhava’s beloved! O You whom all the young girls of Gokula worship! All glories unto You! All glories unto You!]

dāmodara-rati-vardhana-veśe
hari-niṣkuta-vṛndā-vipineśe

[O You who dress Yourself so as to make Lord Dāmodara love You more and more! O Queen of Lord Hari’s pleasure grove, Vṛndāvana!]

vṛṣabhānudadhi-nava-śaśi-lekhe
lalitā-sakhī guṇa-ramita-viśākhe

[O new moon arisen from the ocean of King Vṛṣabhānu! O friend of Lalitā! O You whose virtues delight Viśākhā!]

karuṇāṁ kuru mayi karuṇā-bharite
Sanaka-sanātana-varṇita-carite

[O most merciful goddess! O You whose divine qualities are sung by Sanaka and Sanātana Kumāras! O most merciful Rādhā, please have mercy on me!]

rādhe jaya jaya mādhava-dayite

This song was sung by Rūpa Gosvāmī. He is the real person, actual person, to understand Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. So he says, "All glories to Rādhārāṇī." Rādhe jaya jaya mādhava-dayite. "She's so dear to Kṛṣṇa." Kṛṣṇa, everyone is trying to love Kṛṣṇa, but Kṛṣṇa is trying to love somebody. So how great She is. Just try to understand. Everyone, the whole world, the whole universe, all living entities, they are trying to love Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa-prema.

Lord Caitanya describes, prema-pumārtho mahān. And Rūpa Gosvāmī described that "You are distributing kṛṣṇa-prema." So kṛṣṇa-prema is so valuable, but Kṛṣṇa is after Rādhārāṇī. Just see how Rādhārāṇī is great. Just try to understand the greatness of Rādhārāṇī. Therefore, She is so great, and we have to offer our respect.

Rādhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite. How She is? Gokula-taruṇī-maṇḍala-mahite. Taruṇī, taruṇī means young girls. You'll see the pictures, they are all young girls. But of all the young girls, She is the most beautiful. She is enchanting to the young girls also. She is so beautiful. Gokula-taruṇī-maṇḍala-mahite.

Dāmodara-rati-vardhana-veśe. And She always dresses Her so nicely that Dāmodara, Kṛṣṇa, becomes attracted by Her beauty. Hari-niṣkuta-vṛndā-vipineśe. And She is the only lovable object of Kṛṣṇa, and She is the queen of Vṛndāvana. This queen of Vṛndāvana... You'll find in Vṛndāvana, if you go to Vṛndāvana, everyone is worshiping Rādhārāṇī. Rāṇī means queen. They are always speaking, "Jaya Rādhe!"

Rādhārāṇī… All the devotees in Vṛndāvana, they are worshipper of Rādhārāṇī. Hari-niṣkuta-vṛndā-vipineśe. Vṛṣabhānudadhi-nava-śaśi-lekhe. And She appeared as the daughter of King Vṛṣabhānu, and Her companion, Lalitā-sakhī and Viśākha-sakhī, and the devotees.

So on behalf of the pure devotees of Kṛṣṇa, Rūpa Gosvāmī is praying, karuṇāṁ kuru mayi karuṇā-bharite: "O my worshipable Rādhārāṇī, You are full of mercy. So I am begging of Your mercy because You are so merciful, very easily You offer, bestow Your mercy. So I am begging Your mercy." Karuṇāṁ kuru mayi karuṇā-bharite, sanaka-sanātana-varṇita-carite.

Now somebody may say, "Oh, you are so great, learned scholar, you are so great saintly person, and you are begging mercy from an ordinary girl? How is that?" Therefore, Rūpa Gosvāmī says, "Oh, this is not ordinary girl." Sanaka-sanātana-varṇita-carite: "This girl's description is possible to be made by great saintly person like Sanaka-Sanātana. She is not ordinary."

So the lesson is that we should not treat Rādhārāṇī as ordinary girl or Kṛṣṇa as ordinary man. They are the Supreme Absolute Truth. But in the Absolute Truth, there is the pleasure potency, and that is exhibited in the dealings of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. And Rādhā's expansion all the gopīs, and Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Lord.
