In response to Disquiet Junto Project 0502: Global Swarming
The Assignment: Create a swarm of imaginary insects.

Conceptual Process: The title comes from the protagonist of Franz Kafka's Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis) - Gregor Samsa, who awoke one morning to find himself transformed into a "monstrous vermin" "insect" "cockroach"... a variety of English translations for the original "Ungeheueres Ungeziefer" which is difficult to translate (and the translation of which has been heavily discussed, here's a nice overview if you're not already familiar: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/on-translating-kafkas-the-metamorphosis). I have a lot of empathy for Gregor which extends to empathy for insects in general whereby I try to resist the instinct to be disturbed by them - so I initially set off on this trying to make a "swarm" from the Juntonian insect bank that was not disturbing or frightening, and was instead either empathetic or like a cool bug party that I'd like to join. After about 5 minutes of editing, the bug party became a cacophony and then whittled down into something slightly more disturbing, or at least intense in a way that is uncomfortable at several points. I couldn't escape the notion of an encounter with a swarm of insects, however unique and beautifully imaginary they are, being disturbing, unnerving, uncomfortable. So I went with it, trying to make something where the listener (and protagonist in the story of this swarm) might be disturbed a few times as the swarm gets closer and swells around them, but is ultimately left in a state of some relief, and curiosity once the swarm decides to move on. Because doesn't the swarm sound a bit like mechanical insects, potentially like a swarm of man-made insect-drones that could be surveilling millions of dimensions of your physical and mental existence? What do they want? What are they looking for? But at least they didn't investigate for long and decide to keep moving - but what data did they capture, or might they have captured something more, or other, than data...?

Technical Process: Selected the insects listed below. Made 4 different test tracks with several loops of each insect, and various effects on each layer of each insect. Played with the balance so it sounds a bit like they are coming from one side, enveloping you in a few swells, then move along to the other side and off into the distance. Then layered the 4 tests tracks on top of each other. 

This track features several varieties of the following insects from the schwärmeliche Junto-Menagerie, and includes no other sounds:

The prospects of having one of my songs featured in a contemporary art museum initially immobilized me, as the stakes for this week’s project felt much higher to me. I ultimately decided that the best way to get started was to approach this like any other Disquiet Junto Project.

I envisioned a very lo-fi feel for this song, so I went with a very simple groove on a Roland CR-78 plugin, with a synth bass riff quickly following. While the minimalist motif was a decent foundation, I deemed it insufficient for a full song. As such, I began to envision sounds from a waiting room. The rustling pages of a magazine. A signature from a pencil. A telephone ring. Distant chatter. These elements plus several others made up the brand new intro for “Afternoon Appointment”.

For some additional sound effects, my mind turned to the Animal Crossing, a Nintendo IP that features a set of noisemakers known as Gyroids, creatures that produce brief noises based on the environment they are situated in. Just days before I wrote “Afternoon Appointment”, the Gyroids were reintroduced in a patch for the series’ newest installment, New Horizons. Unfortunately, I do not own that game, so I settled for the Gyroid noises found in the game’s predecessor, New Leaf.

Afternoon Appointment (disquiet0515)

As I currently work for a mental health clinic who plays no music in the waiting room, I focused in this recording on the noise that could be in the room. Or the idea of the muffed thoughts of those waiting for appointments and those like myself who are working. 
This track is recorded and amplified mechanical noise, then sampled and granulated with various norns scrips. A telharmonic processed through a Strega hopefully completes this sonic space.

About this track: 
If I were waiting for a therapy appointment, I would want to feel calm and contemplative. Nature makes me feel this way, also music. A nice pondering melody perhaps. A BPM near my resting heart rate of 60. So I used nature sounds (from Freesounds.org). I like being by water. I included some water sounds here. You have to be careful with the water sounds in lobbies. People may have to go to the bathroom too much. Also frogs. But I don't think I found a frog sound. It's mostly birds here. Lots and lots of birds. Hearing these birds made me thankful for birds, and sad for the ones my cats have murdered. I wonder if bird are real? So next I did my best to play calm and contemplative melodies on the D celtic minor Rav tongue drum because its fun to play and makes me happy. Pitched the tongue up an octave on one track. Converted to midi harmony for piano and a synth for other tracks. I'm not 100% sure if I would like this to play in a lobby. Perhaps its too intense. Hard to say. I'd probably be down for the experience.

Disquiet Junto Project 0515: Talking Cure
The Assignment: Write music for a psychotherapist’s waiting room.

Step 1. Imagine that you are about to consult a therapist. You are sitting in the waiting room of his/her/their office.

Step 2. Picture some comfortable chairs, abstract artworks on the wall, and some large plants in the corners of the room. The perfect music for this moment is playing out of a high quality, vintage-looking speaker. You are ready for your appointment.

Step 3. Create a piece of music that you imagine hearing in this situation. The duration of the piece is up to you. If you are OK with your work potentially being excerpted, please license it with a CC license that permits derivative works (i.e., any CC license that does not include ND, “no derivative works”).

Disquiet Junto Project 0576: Casual Resolution
The Assignment: Get a musical New Year’s resolution out of the way.

A musical resolution for 2023 for me is to finish tracks. Finish. More. Tracks.

My submission was at risk of becoming another 40 second WIP. But now its finished :) My approach was doing something fun, sample based and mostly in the box with heavy timeline and midi editing. No random or generative this time. And LOUD.

Imminent Wave (disquiet0588)

I used the sample of Bassel's voice to create some of the pads and granular noise, I modulated these using ApeDelay, AudioDamage Suite on iOS, AmazingNoises Reverb and AUFX Dub/Space/Push were also employed in this part of the process.  I then created a melancholic melody using two Fugues via FugueMachine which I then recorded midi loops of into KorgGadget; which in turn then powered several synths.  The rhythm track was created using Olympia Noise Co.'s Patterning.  Final compositing was done with Logic Pro X...  Thanks for dropping by and taking time to view and listen.  

Disquiet Junto Project 0294: Offline Status
Pay tribute to the late Bassel Khartabil by turning his spoken words into music.

Note: Tracks from this project, and from previous Bassel-related Junto projects, may be played on the Over the Edge radio show on August 24th.

Step 1: This is the second of two consecutive projects we’re undertaking, following the news of Bassel Khartabil’s death. (If you’re new to the Junto, Bassel was an open-source coder who did a lot of work in CGI before being imprisoned in Syria. Word of his execution just recently became public. This is the sixth project we’ve done about him over the years.)

Step 2: Download the following short snippet of an audio file, just seven seconds, of Bassel speaking. In it you’ll hear his voice, as well as the lofi glory of mundane Internet communication, and some beeping inherent in everyday digital tools. You’ll use all this audio in your own track for this project. It’s on dropbox.com.

Step 3: Listen closely to Bassel’s voice and the other sounds that make up the file from Step 2.

Step 4: Record a piece of music that either begins with or ends with the full audio of Bassel’s voice. Use your own original instrumentation as well as elements extracted from the audio file as part of your composition to either extend from or lead up to the provided audio.
