An excerpt from Lewis Ingham's "A storm, a city" premiered in 2017. After the storm; being the third section to a 45 minute long piece, is completely unaccompanied, unlike the first two sections which include electronic backing tracks and live electronics.

This piece started off as a meditational practise of relaxing and allowing all the overtones to come out at different times from only one string and only using the bow. It developed further by using a second string detuned to be almost in unison and then playing few fingered notes accompanied by voice to bring out the prominent overtones in the pulsing. 
This piece, to me, feels like I'm just assisting the cello in playing what it naturally wants to, and has a therapeutic effect on me when I perform it.

Experimenting with different directions and pressures of the bow.

This piece can be interpreted by any string instrument, starting at the horizontal line to the left of the score, following the continuous line until it takes you back to the beginning. The separation of the left and right sides represents the performers hands. Left= left hand follows the directions of the line using random pitches which is shown by the cluster of colours. (Colours represent pitches) Right= right hand follows the directions with the bow resulting in unpitched pressured sounds. (Pink doesn't scientifically exist so I gave it a sound that is more unique.)

How I interpret this piece is a little cheesy but I see it as life, you start at the beginning and don't know where you're going. Life takes you in all directions, even backwards, which I don't think is actually a bad thing. You can't predict what's going to happen next, the only thing that is predictable is the ending, where you end where you started; from not existing, to exisiting, then to not existing again.

This is a sample/snippet of the general sound and texture of this piece. This work is something that is centred around the performance rather than the resulting music.

5 voices and 5 string instruments, each performer following a different coloured ribbon. 
Singing the pitch and bowing normally but then reversing the technique every time the ribbon flips (has a fold) so it would be bowing with the wood of the bow and inhale singing. 

This version is a very clustered sound, with pitches being very close together. harmonies can be varied based on different colour combinations; can be a very pretty sound or a very eerie one.

Just a fun jam sesh me and Deborah did together when she was staying in melbourne :) unfortunately the zoom recorder died after 11 mins (it definitely went for way longer...) but 11 mins is still pretty long :P
