Saafi Brothers are formed in the spirit of chillout & dub, and they have a mystical connection when placing with their audience into higher spheres. They called it the secret of danceable speed, where in ambient tracks you experience feelings through emotive music, starting with deep intros and then merging into dubwise beats that get the tunes rocking.

Liquid Beach represented another perfect demonstration of the Saafi-style, made up of the will to experiment and a feeling for the combination of different influences between west and east.

They made a hybrid of ambient, dub, house, trance and sun-kissed psychedelics. And within these softly progressive realms, Liquid Beach delved into ambience and tranced beats and again between shining through ethno elements form flawless to composed arrangements.



The tracks have a deceptive sense of duality. On one had, the music would be ideal for chilling out at home - or tripping depending on your poison. At the same time, there's enough hustle happening that the material is eminently danceable. That juxtapose is at work on a cut like "Sunchild", a tribal number with an enveloping density but persistent and chugging beat. Again on "Lovin' Music" with its deeply twisted vocals and deep percussion, and the title album track, "Liquid Beach". The album is rounded off with two different mixes of the morning trance-tinged "Metapop“.

CONTEXT: Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm is already a firebrand in the modern classical world, collaborating with contemporaries such as Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds and Anne Müller. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, has won him many fans around the world.

As announced by Drowned In Sound, he finally returns on October 10th 2011 with the successor to his highly acclaimed solo piano works Wintermusik and The Bells. Released on Erased Tapes Records and entitled FELT, the album will coincide with a European tour in November 2011 – a truly memorable and magical live experience.


CONTENT: Having recorded his last album live in a large, reverberant church, Nils Frahm now invites you to put on your headphones and dive into a world of microscopic and delicate sounds – so intimate that you could be sitting beside him.

Recorded late at night in the reflective solitude and silence of his studio in Berlin, Frahm uncovers a new sound and source of inspiration within these peaceful moments:

'Originally I wanted to do my neighbours a favour by damping the sound of my piano. If I want to play piano during the quiet of the night, the only respectful way is by layering thick felt in front of the strings and using very gentle fingers. It was then that I discovered that my piano sounds beautiful with the damper.’

Captivated by this sonic exposition, he placed the microphones so deep inside the piano that they were almost touching the strings. This brought a host of external sounds to the recordings which most producers would try their hardest to hide:

‘I hear myself breathing and panting, the scraping sound of the piano's action and the creaking of my wooden floorboards – all equally as loud as the music. The music becomes a contingency, a chance, an accident within all this rustling. My heart opens and I wonder what exactly it is that makes me feel so happy.’

FELT creates its own personal microcosm, offering a refuge of tender and honest beauty.

Nova honours the legacy of 2005 Albedo with another outstanding narrative-driven compilation showcasing more intimate yet intriguing fresh sounds. [ Imaginary Friends ] features a melange of styles, different facets of ambient electronica infused with neo-classical moods, acoustic sensibilities, epic melodies and impressionistic textures and tempos for a vibrant and overall warm feel. 

As always emphasis was put on gathering original and tailor-made compositions from a variety of well-known artists on Ultimae and interesting newcomers such as Murya from Iceland, offthesky from the US, to create a musical palette that shares Nova's own eclectic and unconventional vision. "With Imaginary Friends I've wanted to speak about solitude but not seen as alienation, disillusionment or isolationism. Loneliness somehow involves the release of human spirit and the consequent building of a new paradigm. Personal moments, like to plug in a pair of headphones and go for a walk in a park, sitting in a café watching passers by or when writing a poem. Poetry is not a simple form of art, no matter what language is. It requires some skill, a bit of logic, and lots of heart: it's about intensity, like ambient music."

Icelandic contemporary composer Ólafur Arnalds created and released a new song, one per day for one for one whole week during the month of October 2011. The songs were recorded and filmed live in the living room of his Reykjavik apartment and released instantly for free as streamed videos and mp3 downloads.

This time Ólafur takes the idea further and invites the audience into the comfort of his living room, where the songs were recorded live and the whole process filmed. IN HIS OWN WORDS: ‘One night I was just playing my piano here in this apartment and I was writing a new song and I didn't have my phone on me which I usually use to record ideas. So I actually took out my MacBook and I didn't want to open like a proper recording program, so I just opened Photo Booth and recorded a video of myself playing the song so that I would remember the song. And I really liked the atmosphere of that video and that's when I thought I should do a series of songs in my living room...’             – Ólafur Arnalds


Born in the suburban Icelandic town of Mosfellsbær, a few kilometers outside of Reykjavík, the 24-year old composer has always enjoyed pushing boundaries with both his studio work and his live-shows. Through relentless touring and determination this young artist has steadily gained recognition worldwide since his 2007 debut Eulogy for Evolution. Two years have been passed since Dae Kim’s debut effort, "Solace", was released. In need of diversion, he drew attention to circumstances that was unusual to his forte, ranging from producing for singer-songwriters to several yet to be released projects. The exploration, in which allowed him to diversify and improve his compositional ability and musicianship that obeys electro-acoustic driven solo efforts, ended with Dae’s latest single, Clemency (Memoir Music label). To embellish his carefully curated discography, he returns with the latest EP entitled, “Redemption”.

To quote Dae, “Three months of grieve and isolation has gifted me with three beautiful songs. They were two years more mature and wiser than my debut album. A work that held its obedience to the writer’s instinct holds honesty, that is incomparable.
