After a long hiatus, Canadian producer & singer/songwriter Dead Horse Beats aka Patrick Wade returns to Bastard Jazz with his new EP ‘Moon Mist’. Heavily inspired by various religious music groups from the 60s and 70s, the EP features DHB’s infectious hooks coupled with upfront, driving production and layered instrumentation. “I was listening to a lot of gospel music by people like TL Barrett, the Swan Silvertones, DR Hooker,New Creation, Tim Maia’s Cultura Racional religious sect era stuff; and also this Australian self-produced Scientology record by a guy named Richard Yared” says Patrick.

Singing in his signature laidback & spaced out vocal style, the EP is lyrically all about a woman quitting being a priest and starting her own religion in a retirement community. “I was kind of imagining her band all living in Del Boca Vista together making this record doing small amounts of psychedelic drugs and lawn bowling together.”  As odd as that may sound, it sort of comes together and makes sense when digging into the EP - besides just overall just being a straight up bop.

There's an old Brian Eno quote that is inevitably referenced when talking about the Velvet Underground - something along the lines of "They only sold 30,000 copies of their first album, but everyone who bought the album started a band". It's slightly inaccurate (they sold a lot more copies), but the message is clear: few bands have had such an outsized, potent, and wide reaching effect on the musicians that followed in their footsteps. 

Their stubborn desire to continually approach songwriting from the left field, and continuous sonic reinvention reverberated for decades, influencing punk, post-punk, art rock, ambient music, even notably influencing real political revolution in Czechoslovakia.

Home Days' - the newest single from Dead Horse Beats - is the Montreal producer's latest entry into his catalogue of soulful R&B tunes. 
While the beatmaker's hip hop influences are evident in the thickness and solidity of the rhythm section, equal stylistic weight is given to the concise melodies of late 70s funk songs by the likes of Bootsy Collins or O.V. Wright and the drifting guitars, synths, and sensibilities of modern pop music.

Featuring a shimmering clavinet performance by Francis Arseneau and the dynamic guitars of Gabriel White, the single is the first release from his upcoming LP Inglaterra, which is scheduled for a summer 2019 release with Brooklyn imprint Bastard Jazz Recordings.
