Since its launch in 1981, the Wolfenstein video game franchise has sparked controversy. From its often over-the-top violence to its controversial subject matter, the series often finds itself making headlines whenever a new title is announced.

Naturally, the upcoming Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is no exception. The game, which takes place in an alternate timeline in which Nazi Germany has taken over America, sparked a wave of backlash from some for its latest marketing campaign slogan, "Make America Nazi-Free Again" — a play on President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan from his 2016 presidential run. The game took on an unexpected relevance in August, following tragic violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, at a white supremacy rally attended by neo-Nazis.

For Franoszek, a German-born actress who portrays the game's main antagonist, Frau Engel, the subject matter was very close to home "I've done a lot of research to understand my own past and been to Auschwitz and all that, but as an actor what really convinced me was the script. The script to me was very similar to Inglourious Basterds, and I was given the opportunity to play sort of the Cristoph Waltz character as a female with a boytoy.

Berlin-born actress Nina Franoszek, lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles. But she is not a Hollywood star-she calls herself a working character actor. You've probably seen the Grimme Award Winner, in award winning shows like "Tatort" as well as  "Kommissar Rex" or "Weißensee". At the end of the 90s she goes to Los Angeles. She played in Roman Polanski's "The Pianist",  was in front of the camera with Donald Sutherland, Geraldine Chaplin, Tilda Swinton  and Tim Robbins (among many others). She also guest starred in shows like Mad Men. A conversation about her work between art and box office.

The Franoszek Connection: German-American actress Nina Franoszek talks about life on both sides of the Atlantic

You might know Nina Franoszek’s face from the TV drama “Weissensee,” from “Mad Men” or Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist.” The German-American actress and acting coach has appeared in over 100 films and TV shows over a career spanning 20 years.
Nowadays Franoszek has also become a de facto ambassador for the German film community on both sides of the Atlantic. We caught up with her to talk about rejection, life in L.A., loving Berlin and being typecast in Hollywood. “I don’t particularly come across German,” she says. “I’m a little bit too warm for German, so I play a lot of French.”
