Mister Water Wet is the alias of Iggy Romeu - producer, DJ, and fixture based out of the Kansas City scene that produced West Mineral Ltd and C Minus, among myriad other great producers and DJs. Always intriguing, Romeu’s music drifts into vague, enigmatic territory - channeling 90’s ambient, fourth world, exotica, and library to forge a sound that is uniquely his own. On a dreary, rainy night in late January, Mister Water Wet brought his signature sound to Nina HQ.

For the fourth installment of Nina Mix, we invited none other than Karl O’Connor aka Regis to our NYC office. In this two hour mix, he showcases a range of material from his own Downwards (@downwards) imprint - now celebrating its 30th year - alongside some of his favorite music both past and present.

A purveyor of trippy, psychedelic sounds, the Naarm/Melbourne and Berlin-based selector recorded the mix live at Nina HQ while in NYC to play the Nowadays Nonstop party in May 2023.

Nina Label Mix 001: Animalia

Nina Mix 006 comes from the ascendant New Jersey DJ and producer @equissss. As 1/3rd of @ossx, alongside his close friends @dj1elise and @lektorscopes, EQUISS and his cohort are leading a wave that’s defining a new East Coast club sound. 

EQUISS’ Nina Mix provides a sun-kissed take on that sound, seamlessly blending regional US club tracks with euphoric UK Garage and colorful shuffling techno. Alongside a heaping dose of tracks and bootlegs from the OSSX camp, EQUISS showcases a number of tracks from exciting contemporaries like Introspekt, Regal86, MoMa Ready, DJ Swisha, and more. 

He told Nina: “This mix includes club tracks centered around the joy of summer and dedicated to the 3 months of nice weather the tri-state gets.”

Nina Mix 008 comes from prolific Quebecois DJ and producer Francis Latreille, otherwise known as @priori-ties. Over the last half decade, through his production and mixes, he has established himself as a pivotal figure in underground techno.

Priori brings a versatile game, as seen in his collaborations with Adam Feingold, Patrick Holland, and Ramzi among others, while maintaining a signature crystalline sound. As the co-founder of the NAFF imprint, he has helped champion a wide range of artists.

Priori’s Nina Mix is a collection of original material, both contemporary and forthcoming, that showcases the range that has made him one of the most exciting voices in contemporary dance music. Amidst his own production, this mix features forthcoming collaborations from Al Wootton, Cousin and Patrick Holland, along with a strong remix from Aurora Halal.

Nina Mix - 008 - Priori

Nina Mix 009 is a product of the hardgroove revival and one of its boldest leaders, @bregal86. Hailing from Monterrey, Mexico, Regal86 has gained admiration among DJs and dancers alike for the steady stream of bangers he mostly self-releases and for his fearless, hard-charging DJ sets. 

Regal86’s Nina Mix exemplifies both his uncanny ear for colorful and shuffling ‘00s-tinged techno, but also his ability to connect this sound with the present, through his own productions and that of contemporaries like AceMo, Kush Jones, and Dj ANGELDU$𝖙.

Label Mix 004 is from beloved Rotterdam label @nousklaeraudio and its founder, @sjoerdoberman. The mix, consisting entirely of unreleased tracks forthcoming on the label, showcases Nous'klaer Audio’s dancefloor pedigree while nodding to its explorations beyond the club.

As Oberman observes in his label mix interview, “there is a connection between all those tracks though - but I find it hard to pinpoint what that is exactly.” 

The ineffable uniting qualities of the music coming out on Nous'klaer Audio have made it one of most sought-after labels in underground electronic music, for DJs and listeners alike, as well as a springboard for new talent from the Rotterdam scene and beyond.

Nina Label Mix 004: Nous'klaer Audio

Label Mix 005 comes from Los Angeles label @motion-ward and its founder Jesse Sappell aka JS. Started in 2015, the label has steadily gained a passionate collector following for its selective output of oozy, hazy, heady ambient and downtempo music from around the globe. JS told Nina that his mission with Motion Ward is “to release music that hits me in the gut.”

JS’s label mix showcases what he describes as “a pretty soft side of the label.” The mix’s tracklist covers the history of Motion Ward, from the label's first release by LA’s Brown Irvin to its latest album by New Zealand duo Hysterical Love Project, alongside staples like Perila, Ultrafog, Pontiac Streator, and more.

The latest edition of Nina Mix is presented by Los Angeles-based DJ Bianca Lexis (@biancalexis). Over the past five years, Lexis’ NTS Radio show Panorama Heaven has solidified her as a selector’s selector and a must-see DJ. Her unique style frequently explores the realms of rare and elusive Italo disco, off-the-beaten-path house, and more recently, the late ’90s and early 2000s chillout and electronica.

Beyond her impeccable musical discernment, Lexis continues to uncover and champion new and forgotten musical treasures. Bianca's mix for Nina offers a distinctive blend of loungey, trip-hop-infused tracks—a sound both familiar and endlessly intriguing. In her own words, ‘a mix of '90s-heavy dream pop & downtempo :)’.

The most recent Nina Label Mix hails from @theory-therapy, a Sydney-based label, mix series and radio program. In the last two years, Theory Therapy has cultivated a modest yet remarkable catalog. Through their careful selection of contemporary artists and DJs spanning the globe, they've contributed to shaping an unbounded community of kindred spirits. The outcome is a collection of downtempo, ambient, and chillout music emerging from the underground.

Describing their work, Theory Therapy states, “There's a tendency towards textural ambient and downtempo but I think the label's sound is constantly being refined and re-defined with each release. I love music that can't easily be categorized”.

Nina Label Mix 009: Theory Therapy

Label Mix 011 comes to us from @toverberg-collective, a tiny label and collective hailing from Brussel, Belgium, which they describe as “a big(-ish) city in a tiny country.” The Toverberg palette encompasses experimental folk, ambient, and deconstructed sounds. 

Toverberg’s label mix is composed of friends’ demos at various states of completion. It provides a snapshot of a crew developing their collective vision and paving their own lane in the contemporary music landscape.

Nina Mix 012 takes us into the ethereal sonic world of Dylan Khotin-Foote, aka Khotin (@khotin). His sound—vintage but never pastiche—is deep and bursting with colorful, emotive textures that come alive on his Nina mix. The Edmonton-based artist has stitched together an hour of mostly unreleased originals, alongside collaborations with Nik 7 and Patrick Holland.

Label Mix 012 comes from @slagwerk, a vanguard of the new digital experimental music landscape. Founded by Otis Dehaes in 2017, this Brussels-based label and event series represents a fusion of love, dedication, and an uncanny knack for discovering and nurturing underground talent, while embracing an ever-evolving digital ethos.

Otis’s ear has taken Slagwerk 18 releases deep, cementing the label as a hub for experimental music that’s so delightful to listen to, the term “experimental” almost feels wrong, but it isn’t. “Some people might hear some consistency in the output, but I have not necessarily intended it that way,” Otis told Nina. 

Releases from artists like Money Lang, Color Plus, Ange Halliwell, Dasychira, and many more have cemented Slagwerk as a destination for internet music heads looking for a fix of strange, warm, and beautiful music that defies easy categorization. Otis said his Nina label mix “recaps the label’s different emotions throughout the years.”

Label mix 013 celebrates the 10th anniversary of @allergy-season, a crown jewel of the New York dance underground. Founded in 2013 by Physical Therapy, the Ridgewood, Queen-based label was born out of a moment of frustration with the existing label ecosystem. 

Physical Therapy told Nina: “I wanted to see if I could come up with a better way to do things, as well as take control of my own musical output.” This led him to structure Allergy Season in ways that lets artists on the label retain more control of their music and gives them favorable terms.

The Allergy Season label mix highlights many of Physical Therapy’s favorites from the over 200 tracks out on the label. He said, “I was surprised though, I always thought of the label as just mirroring my own personal tastes at any given time, which are constantly shifting, but sorting through the tracks to make the mix—so much of it works together cohesively.”

There are few artists quite like Shy, a Berlin-based, American-born producer publicly recognized under various monikers including Special Guest DJ, Caveman LSD, uon, and through his myriad collaborations. His own productions and mixes consistently defy expectations, adeptly capturing the essence of the moment while continuously pushing boundaries.

Meanwhile, Shy's contributions to other artists' releases echo this distinctive signature sound. Whether collaborative, enigmatic, or paradigm-breaking, his imprint on the realms of modern club and ambient music is undeniable.

In 2021, a notable shift occurred as Shy's latest venture, @triplexlarge (3XL), emerged in the wake of imprints like Experiences Ltd., bblisss, and xpq?, of which he was solely or partially involved in. Since its inception, 3XL has not only delivered straightforward releases from artists like Ulla, Ben Bondy, nueen, and Exael, but also rare collaborative endeavors featuring groups like xphresh, crimeboys, and the evolving band sofa. Unraveling the intricacies of who collaborated with who and discerning the level of care involved is only part of the experience. This week’s label comes from @laurarecs, a Los Angeles label leading the charge in the city’s rave underground. The party-turned-label foregrounds artists from Los Angeles. Their gritty ethos and noisy, unpolished output reflect the sound of the raves they put on and participate in, a far cry from what you’ll hear in the city’s glitzy, clout-chasing clubs. 

Anything from warehouses to open fields to train tracks is fair game and luckily the city has all of that,” the label told Nina. “The scene has this ethos just to make shit happen. LA puts in the work because we have to.”

L.A.U.R.A’s label mix charts its past, present, and future. It’s not only a snapshot of an exciting young label, but a celebration of Los Angeles’ deep well of musical talent and inspiration.

Currently located in the sun-kissed coast of Australia, the hybrid label and apparel company have cultivated a sound and aesthetic that is undeniably its own, through its strong connection to surf culture and the natural world.

As Biscuit, the visionary behind GMT, emphasizes, the label's essence extends far beyond ambient music, reflecting a personal taste that spans a diverse range of musical genres.  Featuring releases from artists such as Jonine, Anthony Naples, Salamanda, and Ben Bondy, whose sonic contributions have enriched the label's vibrant catalog. Alongside these releases, GMT has showcased eclectic mixtapes from the likes of Matt Werth, Cali DeWitt, Matthew Kent, and Misha Hollenbach, further amplifying the label's commitment to inclusivity in musical expression. For almost a decade @8ulentina has been constantly innovating with a distinctive, singular sound. His productions blend diasporic and non-western music within club and club-adjacent motifs, emphasizing the unique distinctions within these genres. His DJ sets have a similar effect, showcasing his talent for weaving together disparate styles, sounds, and feelings, creating singular dancefloor moments. In November, we had the pleasure of hosting 8ULENTINA at a Nina Night at Nowadays, where he displayed the range he is known and loved for. In our latest edition of Nina Mix, we present the recording of that set.

While this week’s label mix technically comes from Marseille, France, it’s truly the product of the internet. @hyperlinkfr founder Fanny Cahu is an active participant in her corner of internet music, searching for under-the-radar artists to amplify their art through the platform she single-handedly built. 			

“While there's no rigid sound, I aim for coherence within a particular niche, representing what I love most—ranging from ambient to pop to grime, with a strong emphasis on sound design,” she told Nina.

Her label mix is a testament to the label’s diverse, yet aesthetically focused and refined output. She effortlessly steers through catalog highlights, ranging from eerie ambient tracks to post-apocalyptic drum-and-bass to experimental pop.

Last March, the California-bred artist Eera, also known as a founding member of the influential New York crew Surf Gang, also known as a producer who has laced tracks for everyone from Bladee to Babyxsosa, Rich The Kid to Black Kray—did a DJ set as part of Nina Night at the New York club Nowadays. Eera’s session for Nina highlights the same tracklist that he played at the club. It’s a washy melding of rave, rap, ambient, techno, and club; it makes sonic connections, and it makes us excited about the future of both the producer and the wider community from which he incubated. The Oklahoma City-based label @fixedrhythms’ motto is “electronic music curated by intuition and love,” which is one way to make it clear that it is not a by-the-books techno imprint. The label, which Taylor McKenzie and Stewart Whitmarsh started in 2018, is a thoughtful collection of electronic music that spans multiple styles. And Fixed Rhythms uses their middle American location as an asset, not a liability—from their OKC perch, they can make moves that sidestep (or not) big city conversations around genre conventions in underground music.

The New York label @humanpitch explores electronic sounds that sit in the cracks between more codified genres. In contrast to many NYC imprints, Human Pitch’s mission has less to do with capturing a local scene and more to do with chasing an elusive sonic feeling. It’s an impulse that led founders Tristan Arp (Erin Rioux) and Simisea (Brandon Sanchez) to assemble an international roster of artists, many of whom make music that could exist in ambient, dance, or experimental music contexts. 

Human Pitch’s mix for Nina is an hour of ambiguous body music. It features music from all eight years of the label, and it keeps moving on and off of the dancefloor. In our interview, Tristan Arp speaks of a “creaturely quality” to the music Human Pitch pushes—the label is interested in “songs that sound like living things.” A lot of the music here does have a kind of biomorphic, sculptural presence, one that can only be achieved when the conventions of genre are thrown out of the window.

To give you an idea of the scope of the Barcelona-based label Modern Obscure Music, they have released records from both Japanese noise legend Merzbow and British bass experimenter Shackelton. They have worked with German artist Wolfgang Tillmans and the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. But the label was actually started as an outlet for its founder, Pedro Vian, to put out his own diverse brand of electronic music.

Since then, Modern Obscure Music has grown into an open-hearted experimental music label that operates without boundaries—both sonically and geographically. The label’s mix for Nina follows this logic. “Experimental sounds predominantly define the label, but I'm not committed to a specific style,” Vian says in our interview. “I release what I enjoy, and when I discover something interesting, I feel the need to share it.” Listen to the mix and check out our interview with Vian below.
