The idea for Colony Collapse came about during a trip I took to the central valley, where I met a bunch of beekeepers. They told me about Colony Collapse Disorder, a bee disease which was causing entire colonies of bees to have a mental breakdown-- they suddenly leave their hive and their queen, fly aimlessly off into woods and die. I started wondering how the queen might feel, watching her entire colony abandon her.

I came to Nine Lives with a song I'd written nearly 3 years ago and after a few iterations, arrived at a blues and jazz-infused arrangement that reflects my musical tastes, vocal style, and the mood I wanted to capture. Ultimately, I gravitate toward love songs that convey both bitterness and playfulness, soul and levity. In that regard, Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James, the Queens of Jazz and Blues respectively, are my teachers and inspiration.
