Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt is irrepressible. Creativity flows from the Dutchman like water from a tap: if he’s not making his own fan magazines, writing and performing in web movies about space weed, drawing album art based on his own dreams or making his own synths, he’s probably making music. That music comes under an intricate web of aliases on labels all over the world , and at Dekmantel we recently signed him up as Occult Orientated Crime, one of his more ambient leaning projects, for the May album Just a Clown on Crack. It was a dark and abstract affair and in that spirit Legowelt recorded us a podcast of similarly subversive and immersive sounds. 

Over the course of 80 minutes, the mix has you suspended in outer space as all manner of spaceships and alien life forms drift by your window. Rippling synths and smeared pads, gurgling machines and silky melodies all stretch out into the distance and range from rueful and reflective to rather more meaning later on. It is the perfect soundtrack to sooth busy modern minds.

For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

So here we are, number 28. All grown up, thinking we know everything and that the world is at our beck and call. Little do we know, that is exactly what we know - little. Consistently hungry for knowledge, we peruse through the audible world looking for spikes in our interest in every way or form. Sometimes knowledge finds us. In this case, it comes in a form of a single human by the name of Chris, or Chris SSG or Chris of the former musical oracle, MNML SSGS aka Minimal Sausages (r.i.p). And it shall be known from this moment forward as, Number 28. 

 
If you’re reading this then you probably have Chris to thank. He was a pivotal influence in my (and probably your) musical upbringing. For five solid years,Chris and PC (the other founding member) consistently flooded the world with incredible mixes and unbiased musical journalism through their blog. Most of the mixes are still very much alive and well to this day, in-fact they’re quite sort after. After the end of SSGS, Chris moved to Tokyo to continue to sooth the world in his own unique way, veering away from the traditional ideals of “dance” music and how it's perceived and listened to. 

 

This mix is a testament to that. Playing ambient music to a club full of people has always been a personal dream of mine (you don’t have to dance to enjoy yourself and at least there’s a chance that people will finally shut up on the dance floor). Strung together perfectly, the journey entails so many beautiful and subtle twists and turns that it perfectly fits every atmosphere. Just over two hours of pure bliss, I liken the mix to a session in an isolation tank, relaxing yet stimulating. Odd soundscapes laced with beautiful folk music all woven together with the cream of what we now know as “ambient music” (until we find a more appropriate term).

 
Chris will be doing his thing at the next ONO party (TIP! some very good friends doing some very good things/ link below). He’s joining some other great thinkers alike in bring forth of what will be an incredible night of music.

The mistake is in thinking music is about music. Music is about people. The bonds we make, the experiences we share, the conversations we have: this is the meaning and substance of it. This podcast was made possible by Nadine in Germany, Josh and Gregory in Taiwan, Eileen in Singapore, Toss in Japan, Louis in Australia, and all the producers whose music I used. It was recorded at ‘Soft Landing’, the first ambient event hosted by The Council in Singapore in July 2019. The recording reflects that context and moment, but hopefully carries to wherever you are. "Given that the interview had quite a few questions reflecting on different moments in my musical trajectory, I wanted to share something that matched with that. This is a mix I made some time ago, but never did anything with. It is a very understated and simple mix that is really focused on the tracks themselves. Most of the music I selected has been with me for a long time and has meaning for me. The mix is called ‘safe harbour’; it is meant for a time of rest, a period to reflect on what has happened, to think about what has changed and what remains constant. It was composed in a more deliberate fashion, seeking to distil a specific set of feelings. The mix is one for late at nights, when time fades away."
