“Drop The Other,” the first e.p. from Emika – and already making a late shout for one of the year’s most auspicious debuts. Even before release, Emika’s has received airplay from tastemaking DJs like Zane Lowe, Mary-Anne Hobbs and Nick Grimshaw. On “Drop The Other,” eerie, near-classical piano collides into glitched-out edits and skitering drum patterns, while speaker-shattering lows rub against Emika’s own hushed, cryptic vocals, the iconoclastic blend marking her an artist that makes a habit of defying expectation. Just when you think you know what you’re hearing, Emika flips the script: the cinematic sound architecture evokes the deepest techno, but the tempo moves too slow, the beats too jagged; the sub-bass, meanwhile, could shudder the most underground dubstep club, but it’s paired with haunting, syncopated vocal hooks that suggest Aaliyah’s work with Timbaland taken to its darkest extreme.

 “I make pop, but with a hard edge, playing different sounds and intensities against each other,” she explains. “I try to stay on the fence, leaving room for the listener to create a sense of what its about. It’s all about tension for me.” Tension, indeed. Emika’s music evokes comparison to the visionary likes of the XX, Fever Ray, The Knife, Burial and Circlesquare – artists that stand outside of genre, maintaining an uncanny timelessness of their own. As such, the words and sonics captured on “Drop The Other” prove both utterly catchy but experimental, erotic yet never overtly sexual, clearly confessional but shrouded in mystery.It’s a sound and vision that parallels Emika’s roundabout entrée into becoming a performing artist, a musical journey spiraling from suburban London and inner-city Bristol to cutting-edge Berlin. 

Emika has called in some fantastic remixes. Scuba aka Paul Rose was a London dubstep pioneer, but in 2007 he too relocated to Berlin. His “Vulpine Remix” gets foxy with the original, importing vinyl static, ticking clocks and reversed cymbals, disembodying the vocals and making something deep and driving all at once. GeRM, meanwhile, takes the track “Double Edge” and spin it out into euphoric, glitchy electro-house that has already found its way on to Ministry of Sound playlists.  Emika is also working collaboratively with visual artist Mox, developing designs and video inspired by her music, as well as a kinetic, multimedia live show. Emika's music is full of unexpected emotional alleyways and late-night allure, tones that alternate between crushing and beautiful, beats hypnotic in both the club and in solitude. “Balancing the future and convention, submission and control—that’s very important to me,” Emika concludes. “What I find powerful is the margins: those things inbetween, pointing out but never explaining. It never resolves, so it leaves a pit inside you – but I like the pit.”

Simon Green aka Bonobo returns with one of the key cuts from his forthcoming album, 'Black Sands'. Drawing as much on the rhythms of two-step as the lush soundscapes for which he’s best known, 'Eyesdown' also features a remarkable vocal from Andreya Triana and enough fuzzed-out sub-bass for a binful of dubsteppers. Classic and contemporary, melancholy and exhilarating all at once, 'Eyesdown' sounds like the kind of record Massive Attack could be making if they were starting out now.

Remix duties are taken care of by Floating Points and Warrior One. Floating Points got his break at London’s renowned CDR Sessions a couple of years back. Since then his re-edits have been picked up and championed by the likes of Gilles P and Joy Orbison. Here, he stretches the original out into a broken ballad, the vocals increasingly disembodied, the keyboards playing robot soul. Warrior One, meanwhile, give it some of their trademark ravement vibrations. Whilst Appleblim & Komonazmu do a dubbed out warm minimal version.

It’s the orignal, though, that will keep drawing the listener back – strange, beatufiul, heartfelt and memorable, 'Eyesdown' is a key staging post in Green’s continuing, remarkable musical development.

Solid Steel (10th November) In Hour 1 we welcome Russian producer Kedr Livanskiy who released her album 'Ariadna' in September. The Moscow based artist was born into a shifting and critical time for Russia and her inspiration for this record comes from the Izhevsk (sometimes referred to as "the capital of Russian electronic music") sound of the 80s, including groups like Stuk Bambuka V XI Chasov (Bamboo Crash at 11AM) and Samtsy Dronta. The movement in Russian experimental music is especially inspiring, with acts likes Valery Chkalov, Sergey Kuryokhin and Pop Mechanica; in general, the late-Soviet period was very inspiring with all its figures in music, cinema, their energy and their approach towards life and art. Music featured includes David Cunningham, Dopplereffekt, Simon Fisher Turner, Jonny Oso and Glue by Bicep, and simply told us "This mix is designed to prepare you for winter”

Following the ground-rupturing, genre-fusing success of their ballistic debut full-length, 2009’s Join The Q, The Qemists return with their brilliant second album, Spirit In The System, a bolder and more sophisticated beast betraying a confidence drawn from playing their wild noise to riotous audiences across the globe.

The Qemists – Liam Black, Leon Harris and Dan Arnold – formed while they were school-kids, looking for distraction from the boredom of life on the rural outskirts of Brighton, Rock kids quickly seduced by Rave and Jungle who spent every free hour rehearsing in a barn, or building Electronic tracks on computers. Following years spent experimenting in search of the perfect hybrid of Drum & Bass, Rock, Dubstep, Techno, Dancehall and everything else The Qemists loved, the group exploded onto the scene in 2006 with an acclaimed remix of Coldcut’s ‘Everything Is Under Control’, subsequently signing to Ninja Tune Records as artists in their own right.

Their debut album, Join The Q arrived in February 2009, following a blazing series of 12”s: “Iron Shirt”, ‘Stompbox’, ‘Drop Audio’, ‘Lost Weekend’ (featuring ex-Faith No More front-man Mike Patton), and 2009’s ‘Dem Na Like Me’ (featuring Wiley); two subsequent singles, ‘On The Run’ and ‘S.W.A.G.’, both found their way onto the Radio 1 Daytime Playlist. The Qemists have spent much of the time since taking their music to the people, playing a huge array of festivals across the world (including Japan, where Join The Q was the No 1 electronic album), audiences responding with fervour to their genre-mashing melee, returning to the studio late last year to begin work on this sophomore stomper.

While Spirit In The System delivers plenty of The Qemists trademark visceral energy – like ‘Your Revolution’, first single off the album, with its galloping Drum & Bass tempo changes and ribcage-rattling sub-bass riffs and captivating vocals from Brighton-based Matt Rose – it’s a deeper experience than its predecessor, the group having gained the confidence to touch feelings as well as move bodies. Long-time Qemists collaborator Jenna G delivers the brilliantly anguished vocal for ‘Hurt Less’, second single from the album, one of several cathartic emotional crescendos on the album. Other guest singers on the album include Rob Hawkins, vocalist for Welsh rockers The Automatic, who sings on muscular Techno pumper ‘Apocalypse’; Grime MCs Maxtsa and MC ID, who rap on the wailing-siren skank of ‘Renegade’; Chantel, singer with Invasion, whose vocals grace the windswept drama of ‘Fading Halo’ and drive searing Soul of ‘Life’s Too Short’; and Qemists live hype man Bruno Balanta, who joins Matt Rose for the pavement-shattering stomp of ‘Dirty Words’. Recent tour-mates Enter Shikari, meanwhile, provided vocals and guitar riffs for the riot-starting Thrash-Jungle of ‘Take It Back’.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

Fink - 'See It All'

Fink returns with the second single from his 3rd album of his Ninja Tune Records trilogy, “Sort of Revolution.” 

“See It All,” one of the album’s signature tracks, is blessed with falling piano lines, pulsing electric bass, and a driving rhythm which combines relentless propulsion with sublime subtlety. “Q&A” finds Fink in a deeply soulful and moody a cappella, building a tune from his own vocal parts - layers of harmony buzzing through your ears, as warm and rich as it is clever and hypnotic. Both of these tracks were recently recorded live on Fink’s latest Gilles Peterson Maida Vale session for BBC Radio 1, while the LP version of “See It All” has just been confirmed as the opening track on the season premiere on the longstanding and now infamous TV show CSI:NY. 

Remixes come from D*L*I*D (fresh from their stunning remix of Phoenix's "1901" single, this remix is only their second!), Emika (Ninja Tune's latest signing, bringing Berlin heaviness to the table), and Fink’s dub alter-ego, Sideshow (critically lauded and internationally sharing 12's with Martyn, remixing Appleblim, and releasing albums on Aus Music). D*L*I*D channels the spirit of J-Dilla, turning the original into a super-heavy head-nodder. Label-mate Emika turns the original into a dark and brooding epic that builds towards a huge finale – a la Massive Attack with serious skunk-paranoia. Sideshow once again showcases Fink’s production cred with an echo box and compression chamber, skillfully stripping the parts and fitting them together into brand new shapes. 

Fin Greenall, aka Fink, is among the more understated of the world’s ‘singer-songwriters’, relying on uncompromising quality of work and an astounding stage presence, rather than major label marketing budgets. A master lyricist and in-demand songwriter, having most recently co-written with John Legend for Legend’s ‘Evolver’ LP as well as two of Ninja Tune’s latest signings: Andreya Triana and Emika. Currently touring the UK with band mates Guy Whittaker on bass and Tim Thornton on drums, Fink is as hectic as ever with a tour of France throughout October; November spent in China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam; the USA in December; and Australia (including 3 headline evenings at the Sydney Festival) and Japan in January.

Ninja Tune is an independent record label based in London, England, created in 1990 by the duo known as Coldcut: pioneers of the emerging hip-hop/electro scene in the eighties. Inspired by a visit to Japan, Matt Black & Jonathon More primarily created Ninja Tune to release music of a more underground, experimental nature, free from the restraints placed on artists by major labels (the restraints they themselves experienced during brief stints with Arista and Big Life.)

Their initial releases were quickly heralded by the press and music afficionados simultaneously. The five volumes of 'DJ Food - Jazz Brakes', saw Coldcut adopt a different moniker in order to release the hypnotic, instrumental hip-hop they'd been working on. Hugely influential on the burgeoning electronic music scene, the releases are still regarded as classics to this day.

Ninja Tune went on to achieve notoriety for its singularly irreverant, funky style and commitment to eclecticism. Despite the releases having a shared attitude and ethos, a constantly growing roster of very different sounding artists was key to the label's success. The darkly imagined, melodically industrial d&b of Amon Tobin was contrasted by the playful, colourful funk of Mr Scruff; DJ Food's line up encompassed Strictly Kev and PC, who went on to craft boundary breaking electronica. In 1997, journalist Will Ashon founded Big Dada as a hip hop imprint of Ninja Tune, and the sub-label went on to release classic records by Diplo, Roots Manuva and Spank Rock, amongst others.

With the musical and multi-media, cut n' paste innovation of Black and More, the studio know-how and musical expertise of artists such as Bonobo, Illum Sphere, Actress, Kid Koala and The Bug, the graphic vision of Openmind, and the sound business practices of the label managers and employees, Ninja Tune has grown into a label that prides itself on producing quality music while serving its artists in a way that no major label would. Satellite offices have opened in Los Angeles and Montreal, and the label has established an excellent reputation and strong networks across the globe.

Ninja Tune now also acts as an umbrella for other creative hot houses such as Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder imprint, and the brilliant Werkdiscs, the label founded by Actress.
