Strictly Kev revisits hip hop from 1989 having been asked to play at  Classic Material, a night run by Chris Read (whose mix we recently featured). Each month the night celebrates a year from Hip Hop’s past. It was the turn of 1989 which was a special year, rich in musical delights with the beginnings of gangster rap taking over Hip Hop and the emergence of De La Soul’s Daisy Age with their incredible ‘3 Feet High & Rising’ album. Solid Steel (17th January) DK steps up with his first mix of the year and it's a focus on new releases from the Ninja Tune family of labels including an exclusive from the forthcoming Illum Sphere album. First up it's the bonus track from the excellent Run the Jewels album featuring Q-Bert, followed by the Falty DL single 'Danger', Jessica Lauren from 2000 and Prime/Decent by Lee Bannon. Then it's African flavours both new and old, the recent Lone giveaway and the first play for 'Near the End' from the superb Illum Sphere album 'Ghosts of Then and Now', out on 10th Feb. Solid Steel (19th September) Coldcut start the show this week, taking Timber for an acid workout with Jack Frost, followed by Francis Bebey remixed by Daphni, Bambounou and classic Fela which coincides with the excellent Finding Fela documentary in cinema's now. Then we take a journey back to 1987 as Coldcut deconstruct their classic first release 'Say Kids What Time Is It?' and rebuild with the original samples and more, for an archeology extended version.
