The Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in D minor is one of the composer’s more significant large-scale works. It is for the composer’s sister, Marie Antoinette. It is for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, two trombones, bass trombone and tuba, timpani, cymbals, snare drum, bass drum, strings, and piano. The first movement is a musical tour-de-force with the constant exchange and flurries of themes and runs between the soloist and the orchestra. It features a very cleverly written development section and a massive and extended cadenza for the piano. The second movement opens with a beautiful serene largo central theme and a sublime, tender closing with the interplay between the woodwinds, strings, French horns, and the soloist. A dark and romantic development section precedes the piano cadenza and the gentle recapitulation. The concerto ends with the explosive third movement, which is a relentless yet playful, fast, and fitting conclusion in Rondo form.
