Walking down the high street past chuggers imploring
So many worthy causes I shouldn’t be ignoring
Everyone seems to want a donation from me
With heart rending stories to persuade me to give to charity 

Images of suffering, Images of strife
Is it too much for everyone to have a safe, secure life
Charity may alleviate some immediate misery
But the problems are created and sustained by too much inequality 

So I’ll give you my coin if you think it will help
And I’m sure in a small way it will
But the reason for a lot of pain in this world
Is that too much inequality can kill

While some suffer and starve their way through miserable days
A few can spend and spend and have what they please
Then salve any qualms they may have that could shatter their lies
By finding photogenic ways to philanthropise

A few pounds given to charity, won’t even begin to tackle poverty
Although the adverts are purpose built, to tug at the heartstrings and target guilt
The solution that comes from charity makes it easier to accept inequality
And how many wealthy people would pay the price
To rebalance wealth so everyone gets a fair slice
Pay enough to give people dignity
Not make them dependant on charity

Lock yourself behind walls in you mind and uniformed guards
Turn away from the others for whom everything is so hard
Repeat the mantra that there’s no money tree
Then wait for the applause as you give a small percentage to charity
