Hugging the bend and blowing kisses since 2012, Antinote has been a vessel of choice for lovers of left-of-centre dance music and retro-laced boogie. Covering a supremely wide range of styles, the Parisian outlet has carved out a musical lane truly its own by putting on a nonstop celebration of electronics’ inexhaustible power of enthrallment. Toasting to its ten years splashing the game with continuously reasserted outsider bravura, label captain Zaltan has bottled some of the finest expressions out Antinote’s versatile vaults of sound to form the present “X” compilation, “ten years of loving notes and foolin around 2012-2022".

“I recently found this mix of weird R&B dubs while pillaging old laptops for music and I haven’t turned it off since. If you've ever dug through old drives for anything you know how mundane and unrewarding it can be. It's like a road trip that never ends. However, when you come across a file labeled  "Actavis and Activator" you pull the car over and see what's going on. I couldn’t tell you when or why I made it but I’m glad I did. Feel good vibes for feel bad times. Hope you like it.”

 MINI INTERVIEW WITH SCHOOLBELL

Q: How did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the result? 

I’ve been meditating a lot. Haha, no, honestly, my little girl loves to play with the levers on my sound card, so the recording part has become a bit more time-consuming and nerve-wracking. Other than that, it’s the usual. I have a box where I keep the new records I want to use. I start with those to see what direction they want to take me, and add a few older favorites where they might fit. 



Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

I have quite a few records here that I’ve found while traveling over the last few years. Some from my visits to Sweden and Denmark and four or five from our last visit to Argentina. The rest of the family was sick with the flu at the beginning of our time in Buenos Aires, so I had more time than expected to visit record stores in and around the city. Knowing where I found a record or who recommended it to me is always a nice memory, and it remains with most of my records even after 30 years. 



Q: How do you dig for old/new music/records?

Well, most of it is online these days, but I still love to go out diggin or swap with friends. These days I rarely have the time to go to record stores, flea markets or second-hand stores, but it’s all the more fun. Diggin used to be much more dependent on whether I found something nice or not, now I can just keep going for the fun of it. 



Q: One record that doesn’t want to leave your turntable lately?

I try not to play my favorite record(s) non-stop like I used to, but rather as a reward after a long day or when I need to cheer myself up. It’s usually hard for me to choose one, but lately it’s been “pursuit of color” I’d say. It took me more than fifteen years to find a copy and when I finally did, I had almost forgotten how much I loved it.  



Q: Music bonds people. Any djs/projects/etc.. you would like to shout out? 

Big up to all my friends here in Zürich: the hum‘ crew M&M, Oli, phantom island massiv Tobi, Ron, Lexx, my Kern buddies, Fabi for keeping it real and all the good laughs, Nick and the whole crew, Alex and Sacha and everyone involved, missing it, Buzz for never stopping, Synths of World for the good energy, much love, CocoFresco, looking forward. Guided by curiosity and a love for musical discovery, Balearic Banana open up their bags of high grade for this edition. Known for their fine taste and genre-blurring sets, Berlin based duo weave worldly treats around a strong Brazilian thread for this mix. Perfectly suited for a warm summer night, this one invites you to kick back and float off into the haze.

PLASTIC FANTASTIC is very pleased to be relaunching the series with an exclusive guest-mix from Sanky Was Here.

For the uninitiated, would you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

‘Hola, my name is Sanky, I can't seem to shake a childhood nickname at 52..! Anyway, I grew up in Newcastle amongst some nerdy soul and jazz types which was kind of my first and probably last love. I live in Mexico currently’.

Can you provide some insights to your mix, its inspiration, location of recording, or perhaps a few words about some of the records you’ve included?

‘As I don’t have an address here, I spend a while building up (my record collection) either back in the UK or in NYC, and a few times a year I’ll rip them all. So the mixes take a while, but I like that it’s another ‘edit’ to what I really like longterm. I think this mix is genre-free and focused on mood. I do think of it as a mix of two halves, really focused around what’s in the bag for the summer, and with a few places I’m playing in mind. Just trying to send out some love and emotional connection. There's a couple of new discoveries and weird rarities, alongside some all-time winners that I just feel are good for a summer kick-off. Mama Milk (the 2nd track on the mix) just reminds me of some hazy Ibiza afternoons, and who would’ve thought there’s ANOTHER William Pitt record worth a late night dance too!’

Are there any upcoming projects you have in the pipeline which you would like to share?

‘Well, good question. Covid got me fiddling with Ableton and learning (failing!) to play some keyboards. I made a few sketches which I have told myself I should finish this year. It’s about as close to naive pop as you can get. I played some to a couple of people and they were more enthusiastic than myself about them for sure!
Other than that, playing a couple of festivals, the mighty Love International in Tisno/Croatia in July, and the We Out Here Festival in August.’

And now, a little bit of JAZ

John Zahl, also known as JAZ, is a DJ and record collector based in New York, USA, well-known for his eccentric edits and oddball mixes. We managed to connect with John after he'd arrived back in NYC after a few months spent travelling.

His mix, which was actually recorded nine years ago for Sanpo Disco on NTS Radio, features many of his all-time favourite records. He tells us these are songs that he still loves, and which remain in constant rotation. We'd like to mention a few of the tracks, starting with the lovely slo-mo/Italo disco record 'Non Ricordo, Ma Piangendo', B-side of a rare 7" by Giancarlo Aspromonte. Pit Troja's 'Der Voodoo Mann' from 1985 can only be described as German hip-hop over a Moroder-esque bass-line, wonderfully eccentric, as advertised! The late great Björn Holm's 'Tid At Stå Stilla' from his 1984 LP Bortom Gränsernas Hav, takes us into Swedish synth-pop territory. The mix features a few of JAZ's own edits, including 'Cloud Worship' which has to be one of our favourite edits of all time, just superb. This is an exceptionally well put-together mix, and despite the wide range of material, it flows perfectly and naturally, as a good eclectic mix should do.

Known for his work behind Amok Radio, Oubli, and the YouTube channel 50eurogigs, Bojan brings his ear for overlooked gems into sharp focus here. The mix drifts through a wedge of new finds from a recent trip to Brazil, weaving in Hip Hop, R&B, Street Soul, and downtempo disco, stitched together in a relaxed manner. It's the sound of summer on plastic chairs, with an ice cold one in your hand.
