Optimo Music presents “Janara” the new 8 track album from Italy’s José Manuel. We always have our ears open for music that is unique, powerful and that can conjure up a ritualistic atmosphere, and this meistrerwerk does all that, and then some. We knew we had to release it after the first listen.

This album is a result of the necessity of exploring and opening my mind to new musical horizons, by testing the main traditional instrument of the Italian region Campania, whose name is “Tammorra”. It is a big drum, which must not be confused with the typical tambourine, made from a wrap of wood shaped in a circle and covered with dried skin (almost always goatskin or sheepskin). This instrument was used during playful events, especially during rituals and ceremonies, such as the frequent devotional pilgrimages in honour of the Virgin Mary. By using this instrument, the sound, the rite and the magic could take possession of the mind and the body creating a perfect union. Also, the dancers, as if they were bitten by a tarantula and possessed by a strange evil, launched themselves to an uncontrolled dance by moving every part of their body. 


In addition to the Tammorra, I also inserted some texts, which have been written by some Neapolitan friends and interpreted with Neapolitans voices, in honour of the “JANARA”. The Janara represents a popular belief of the Southern Italian regions, particularly of the Benevento area. The Janara is one of the many types of witches represented by folktales belonging to the rural tradition. 

The Janara was expert in medical herbs, which were also be used for her magical practices, such as the manufacturing of ointment. The ointment gave her the power to become incorporeal with the same nature as the wind. According to the tradition, in order to snatch the Janara it was necessary to grab her by the hair. It was also said that if anyone was able to capture the Janara during her incorporeal moment then Janara herself would offer protection to them and their family for seven generations, in exchange for her freedom.   


With this work I hope that the listener might get carried away by the spirit of this pagan and popular legend that can be still be considered as current. As a matter of fact, the folk tales speak of a probable comeback of the Janara, who after being burned at the stake seems to be thirsting for revenge for the evil suffered.

Another Zru Vogue opus, a full-length album exploring themes of spirituality & nocturnal deliverance. ‘Before The Moon Disappears’ introduces more recent productions from the duo actually composed of Andrew L. Jackson & Rick Cuevas, followed by Patrick Coyne (long time Zru partner) at drums on some of the tracks. The sound is more ethereal, crossing up their funky groove with supernatural effects: smooth electronic arrangements meeting up the tribalistic mood of a desertic ground, drawning a place for Andy's voice... The guitars are delayed, treated with effects and thus brings a 'lounge' approach to the sound. All that gives the impression to face a dandy, speaking out 'cristal-clear' to your mind and only to your mind. This style reminds how chic and ellaborated Zru is! It results in a very immersive tale, calling the inside wish to move up and swim in an intriguing poetry that evokes surrealist experiments. This is how Zru Vogue stimulates your own-self. “You know how sometimes you try to fit in, but you stand out like a man in a rabbit costume on fire?” lf you're thinking to existentialism, Zru has the answer, that’s where their fictional hero comes up to the story: “Zero, a nothing guy living an ordinary life until he finds himself in an alternate, surreal dimension of reality where he starts to question fundamental notions of his own existence.”

Edinburgh enigma @eyesofothers comes back with friends on the Global Warming Records catalog. Half a year after the release of his critically acclaimed mini-album Elevenses, he invited a couple of brilliant producers to rework his ghostly leftfield pop productions.

A fellow scotsman to start with, the sluggish beats enthusiast @coolantbowser makes his remix debut here reshaping ‘Elevenses’ into a slow and swinging dancefloor heater.

Also on the lineup, our homeboy Jon Beige @beigebeige brings some heavily chemical energy with a slower-but-faster take on ‘First and Last’, loaded with high tech percussions and hypnotic dub soundscapes.

The release is visually scored by the Manchester-based creative studio DRME, using original Eyes of Others footage from a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides.

Global Warming Records is run by Franco-British producer and talent seeker @malcolmaudio, who imagines and shapes each project hand in hand with his artists. Remixed Twice will be the label’s 17th release.

Eyes of Others - Elevenses (Coolant Bowser Remix)

It was a full moon tonight; it felt bigger than ever before, its expanse taking over the entire sky. Under its glare, strange things took place; unexplainable happenings that people couldn't fathom. There was a change in moods and temperaments, in personalities and actions - a nocturnal switch that sent everyone on a different course, a course that lasted only as long as the moon hung in the sky.

It's been a couple of years since Leeds-based label Space Ritual released a record into the world. Now they're embarking on their fifth outing, a combined effort between Italian vocalist and producer Eva Geist and Russian singer and composer Chikiss. The three tracks on Sono I'imperatore were originally recorded back in 2018 after the pair met in Berlin and found mutual ground in their creative interests. The contrasting qualities in their solo musical outputs have been fused on this release which travels through strung out rhythms, eerie synths and soft, whispered vocals that drift in and out of focus.

Knotpop is a revelatory lost album of deviant new wave from San Fransisco duo Ixna. Like Brian Eno and The Flying Lizards, the album is a sideways and inverted take on pop music. Jay Cloidt and Marina La Palma were students of David Behrman and Robert Ashley at Mills College, inspired by their infamously irreverent faculty to nudge the avant-garde out of its stuffy tweed and into something more exciting, something clad in denim & leather. Recorded at the Center For Contemporary Music at Mills in 1981, the album combines Cloidt's studio wizardry, sampling abilities and vibrant bass with La Palma’s expressive vocals, and love of made-up and invented languages (Esperanto). Ixna only released one 7" during that time, featuring two songs from this unrealized album, which became sought after over the decades. The discovery of Knotpop will feel like manna from heaven for previous fans, and a welcome addition to the cannon of avant-inverted-pop ur-classics by Suicide, impLOG, Naffi, General Strike, Thick Pigeon and UnknownMix. Flippen Disks open up their tally with whatcan only be described as the mother of all percussive tracks calling on the talents of Post Traumatic Drum Disorder the track PTDD. Run by Amsterdam by way of Berlin, Disc Jockey, Monty, If this opening EP is anything to go by this is going to be all about the Rhythm. Bit crushed 808 deep blue kicks fill the bass bins while every other piece of percussive muscle is flexed with no part of the spectrum left wanting. Record out July 13th on vinyl.
