Quarantine: A Telematic nO(t)pera is a piece by Doug Van Nort, created for the Electro-Acoustic Orchestra (EAO), for the virtual space of connected isolation, for Casper the cat, and for self-sanity. It is not an Opera, but it is not not an Opera. It is a composition for musical, visual and virtual engagement. The music consists of six movements that span disparate sonic landscapes. It is organized by pre-composed palettes that integrate text, graphics, Soundpainting and software instruments, and are augmented with additional real-time composition via EAO’s unique Soundpainting real-time composition/conducting. This content is a crystallization of ideas that have emerged from months of regular online rehearsals that date back to the beginning of the pandemic, bringing together performers from three continents and numerous time zones. As a meditation on (and a product of) our network-mediated present, the nO(t)pera also introduces diverse networks of improvised collaboration: cross performer-machine collaboration, performer-animal collaboration and audience-machine-performer collaboration.

This first performance, created for the Winter Solstice, is a “pocket edition” in that it is the first performance of musical and dramaturgical content that will be performed again, in an expanded fashion soon...

at Harvestworks Fluid art and tech exhibition, 10a Nolan Park, Governors Island, NY. August 27 - October 30 2022.
Installation combines field recordings, objects found in the streets, my own singing and people's responses to the questions "What sound would you most miss if it disappeared tomorrow?" and "What object do you most value?" As if someone from the future gathered together memories of our soundscape, along with our quotidian objects as a record of how we lived and what we cared about here and now. 3D sound environment created by Paul Geluso.

Nostalgia for the Here and Now (binaural version)

This is a piece I prepared and played live at Hola Sessions on the Dec 14th 2023, Prästmon. It´s made with 2 harmonicas, AudioMulch (delay, granulator, arpeggiosynth), one small tourist bell (from Cambridge) and a kalimba built by one of the sons of Hukwe Zawose (Bagamoyo, Tanzania). The "Hola" reference in title is both to the series of books like "Hej Klarinett" and "Hej Piano", beginners notebooks. Hola is spanish for "Hej" (hello in english). I am a beginner in harmonica. I love the sounds from it. So a rediscovering and saying hello to this instrument. The other Hola reference is the "Hola folkhögskola", the folk high school up in the north of Sweden, where I work. Hola Sessions is a series of concerts that has happened there for about 10 years. (The 50 Cent reference - at first it was named Hola Harmonica 50 Cent) has not much to do with the artist 50 Cent more than one of my students wanted me to make a live remix of a track by 50 Cent, or a mashup that I suggested. Now it happened to be more of a mashup in the title of this piece and a bit of sortof  after construction that the harmonicas I played on might have costed 50 Cent at some moment in history. This is as most oftly played live while recording, so it is no edits except some slight compression and some slight EQ added. Hope you enjoy!  Photo by Henrik Ljusberg

Just as William Blake suggested that we could "See a World in a Grain of Sand," so too is it possible to hear a universe in each instance of sound. With this in mind, listen to all sounds and select any one in any given instant to follow into its parallel universe. Sound and/or move with your own sense of that universe. Stay within that universe as long as you wish, via memory, imagination, or any other body/dream/cognitive modality. Remain open to simultaneously occurring universes. Transporting yourself into sounds in this way, go to as many universes as you wish. Or none at all. "Just" listening is ok. The Singing Mask Spirits are guides along your journey.
