If I'm not mistaken, it's been 7 1/2 years since I last made and shared a 'techno' mix. Despite a few years away from the scene, and a less techno-dedicated approach to buying records these days, the idea of putting something together has been niggling at me for a while. I had in mind a deep, mid-paced journey inspired by some of the festivals that I've attended in the last few years.

The tracklist isn't an exercise in wilful obscurity (there's hardly anything released in the last 12 months!), and I nearly abandoned it due to some scruffy transitions, but life's too short to obsess over such things!

'Toils & Snares' Techno Mix, Jan '25

Magnetic talent Adiel, her native Rome’s Goa Club resident DJ on their famed Ultrabeat vinyl nights and global exponent of techno’s wilder shores, now joins [PIAS] Électronique to share original tracks which spiked her 2024 DJ sets. 
First of the series (January 24th) is ‘Bolingo Malenbè’, her collab single with Guinean singer/percussionist Falle Nioke mingling his afrobeats and vocal with her breaks, tribal and dub-influenced techno.
‘Bolingo Malenbè’ dazzles the ear with Nioke’s rich, resonant vocal showcased by her signature ‘techno with emotion’ which combines strong breaksy beats - encompassing vibes of Falle’s traditional West African percussion - alongside hard, juddering, reverb-heavy techno bass lines and spacey sound FX, with gentler melodic interludes of guitar- and piano-like phrases and chords. 
Warm, organic, tribal, yet dark and gritty techno ready to ignite dancefloors far and wide.

A clinic in minimal from the elusive Acting Press boss. 

Why do certain sounds cultivate a cult following? Simply put, it's often because they resist easy consumption. PLO Man and his imprint Acting Press lean into this. 

Searching for the Berlin-based DJ and producer, you won’t find much online presence, interviews or conventional PR. What you will find, if you look hard enough, is a catalogue of records and mixes with a kind of tape hiss charm (a spiritual successor to Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, but scuzzier and lighter on its feet).

Founded in 2015, Acting Press once seemed to belong to the short-lived "outsider house" trend, but is now synonymous with a certain strain of modern minimal, one that is analogue, spacious and pointedly opaque. PLO Man's output is equally sparse by design: this week, he joins the RA Podcast with a characteristically elusive style, accompanying the near two-hour mix is a one-answer Q&A that gives almost nothing away.

Stripped-back, ever-so-slightly sleazy and coated in dust, PLO Man's RA Podcast continues that lineage in style. Opening with the featherlight microhouse of Margaret Dygas, RA.988 unfolds into a carefully curated spectrum of minimal, dub and deep techno. Among familiar names—look out for the blinding Rhythm & Sound and Moodymann blend—are deep cuts and left turns alongside the odd outlier, like lovers' rock pioneer Gregory Isaacs.

Like the best of his forebears, PLO Man wants RA.988 to take time for you to settle in. But once you do, you won’t want to leave.
