Alice in Chains released Nutshell as part of their EP ‘Jar of Flies’ in 1994. The lyrics were written by singer, Layne Staley. The band were part of Seattle’s grunge scene and rose to fame in the early 1990s. The EP debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was the first ever EP to top the chart.

Layne Staley had originally had a band called Alice N’ Chains back in 1987, but they disbanded quite quickly and Layne joined up with Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Starr to form Alice In Chains after Layne got permission from his former bandmates to use the name. The band was signed to Columbia Records in 1989.

Nutshell was never released as a single, but it is one of Alice In Chains most well-known songs. The lyrics, written by Layne, are quite dark and deal with despair and loneliness. They are also thought to refer to Layne’s feelings of frustration over his lack of privacy. Rolling Stone’s readers poll in 2013 voted Nutshell number 9 in “The 10 Saddest Songs of All Time”.

Layne had a distinct tenor vocal style and harmonized vocals with vocalist/guitarist, Jerry Cantrell, for which the band became well-known. Amongst his musical influences were Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.

Layne Staley sadly died of a drug overdose on 5 April 2002 at the age of 34, the same day that Kurt Cobain had died 8 years earlier. He had suffered from depression for most of his adult life; he also became addicted to drugs, probably as a result of his mental health issues. His last live performance was in July 1996 in Missouri after which he became more and more reclusive, struggling with his depression.

Alice In Chains are still an active band today, but since 2011, guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell dedicates Nutshell to late original members Layne Staley and Mike Starr when the band perform in concert. Layne’s vocal talents are much missed.
