LAWANLUPA: The Act Of Killing Mixtape

The Bike Bloc was a civil disobedience technique developed for the Copenhagen Climate Summit (COP15) by the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination. To participate in the Bike Bloc I organized first Sound Swarm, a bicycle-mounted multi-channel acoustic intervention to inspire, distract or disrupt.  Anyone with a boombox and a bicycle can join the Swarm by tuning into one of the of the FM frequencies emitted by the Queen Bee.
The Queen Bee is taking a holiday this year, you can find her resting in the Disobedient Objects exhibit at the V&A Museum in London. For her stay in the museum I've composed this special soundtrack to compliment the other objects in the room. It flows like a DJ mix, blending and beat matching words, stun grenades, tin pot percussion, and street bands with my own compositions in a series of musical movements. Special thanks go out to the people featured in selected recordings, some of whom are professional musicians, others informally singing or speaking, I hope I've used your voices respectfully. Crowned: A Quarantine Mixtape was created on the ship Arka Kinari during a 14-day quarantine at anchor in the bay of Hilo, Hawaii.  Corona was just a local beer when the ship sailed from México bound for Indonesia. The pandemic caught the crew mid-Pacific, the borders quickly slamming shut for all the nations along the planned route: the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Indonesia. The ship diverted north to Hawaii, one of the few landfalls still accepting vessels at sea. Ironically AK is a project to promote resilience to the disasters of climate change, promote energy-autonomy, and bring people together. But disaster came sooner than anybody imagined, plunging us into an anxious purgatory.

We are now ruled by the crown. An invisible germ is our surprising global dictator. Like all royalty it is a parasite, and like all royalty it need to be overthrown. But as we retreated indoors we witnessed nature rebounding, the skies empty of pollution, and oil become near-worthless. This needn’t be an either/or choice, human well-being and the planets well-being aren’t mutually exclusive. Can we manifest a future of internal and external health, making this crisis into a portal? Or are we only capable of backing away from apocalypse when nature moves the battle lines inside our own bodies?

This mix reflects what I’ve heard these last weeks, filtered through the prism of the pandemic. You'll hear a lot from Mexico, the influence of the sea, and the technique of Hawaiian guitar applied to electronic music. It is a slack-key mixtape, with very little beat matching or key mixing. Because the moment calls for rhythm collisions and dissonance.

After a musical experience as drummer in the dub electronics experimental formations La Dk Danse and Audio Pirate, Gauthier Droulez develops a new project alone, born in early 2015, called nö-mad.
Inspired by a passion for the musics of any origins, any cultures and any times, nö-mad tries to explore a universe that is going to meet traditional and urban musics, acoustic and electronic musics.
The trip takes place freely through the open lexical fields of dub, electro music, hip-hop / trip-hop to offer an electronic live set, at the same time psychic, percussive, dancing and spacing.
