My winning entry in the Silly Venture 2022 SE Atari XL/XE music compo. Composed in Raster Music Tracker 1.34. Uses dual POKEY and 4-speed player.
Recorded from real hardware (Atari 800XE). Stereo separation reduced to 80% in post-processing for better headphone experience.

These Goofy Streets
In the near-ish future, society has become a hyper-capitalist technological dystopia. This may seem like a bad thing, but fortunately, the ambient radiation from government nuke tests or some such has mutated the nearby rats into ​badass cyberpunk rats​. ​​With their newfound sentience and coolness, the rats set off on their quest to overthrow the government, getting up to plenty of mischief and wacky hijinks along the way.

Which is more pervasive: the force of chaos that snakes its way through every crack in every wall, or the force of greed that embodies the wall itself? Is an omnipotent entity capable of creating a rival so strong that it itself cannot overcome its own creation? When the vermin you once tread upon without a second thought gain the power to kill, will you be ready?

​Uh oh! Your rats have been stopped at a security checkpoint, and the only way that they will be allowed through is if they can beat the guard in a race through the breakcore factory. If you lose the race, you get fined 50 Amen Bucks, so you'd better come prepared!

This is it, the final confrontation. The battle you've been waiting for your whole life. Fortunately, the final boss, Craig J. Cyberpunk, hits his head on a telephone pole during a high-speed chase sequence about 47 seconds in, so the rats have a party instead.  ​

You're a genius inventor, or at least that's what people use to tell you. But now you're just an outlaw, and you're cornered.  You have no choice but to use it... Even though it's only 1976, you have already understood most of quantum mechanics while your peers are only starting to comprehend it's applications. And so you created the impossible: a time travelling machine which you used to study ancient history and predict future events. 

Yet now is time to leave for good, so what better place to blend in than a cyber-era filled with incredible technologies and where laws are as gray as your cat Gibbson? 

Let's set for 2150! Only this time is different, this time the CTPTTFATP (Committee that prevents Time Travellers from abusing their power) is onto you...

Distant Islands: 51 minutes of experimental SNES chiptune, treating the soundchip like the quirky 8-channel sampler that it is; featuring microtonality, glitches galore, heavy manipulation of the chip's available effects and parameters, and unusual, often homegrown sounds. All tracks were recorded straight from a single Super Famicom system, with the exception of live drums layered onto "Welcome Back to Dragon Airlines".

Someone once told me that when I write I "leave keys for distant islands" and the phrase has stuck with me ever since. This is my first full-length, non-compilation album in three years, and I focused on making something that resonated with me personally and employed the kinds of sounds I wanted to hear. I also went all-out in exploring just how strange, incredible, and absurdly messed-up the SNES could conceivably sound. I'd like to think this covers some new, fresh territory in Super Nintendo chiptune, and I hope you enjoy it!

All songs were composed and written to blank SNES ROMs using osoumen's C700 VST (or forks of the VST that add microtonal functionality and extra MIDI tooling), then recorded from my Super Famicom. The rendered audio is lightly mastered for consistency.

first example: track was mixed through bebe cherie mixer, source sounds are coming from renoise and korg wavestation hardware. aside from a slight reverb on the wavestation, there are zero FX... no EQ, saturation, compression on source sounds. master bus empty.

second example: track was just bounced out of the daw, again no fx, eq, compression. master bus empty.
