I love this song. The beat came together when I was in Austin, Texas after SXSW, I was down there with my mom and while we were waiting in line for some food she heard a street performer from across the street, and sent me over to get her name. We missed most of her set but apparently we weren't the only ones to notice her as my friend Appleby ended up writing an article about her for Pigeons and Planes (which you can read herepigeonsandplanes.com/2015/04/missed…nnection-sxsw/) . After we got back to the hotel I had to look her up, I ended up sampling her and starting this beat in apple headphones, and the instrumental ended up becoming the most listened to song on my phone. I showed it to Roosevelt and after spending weeks listening over he ended up laying down his verse at Classick Studio on my 19th birthday (July 2nd). The next day I flew out to LA to DJ a show for Orgena in his hometown, and I asked him for a verse on Testament. I had played him "Calm The Fuck Down" before and he agreed to be a part of the project if he could get on this track. Once it was finished, Roosevelt described the song as him murdering the beat (1st verse) and Orgena bringing it back to life (2nd verse), and I thought he phrased it perfectly.

I usually don't have a particular artist in mind when I make beats, but as soon as I finished this instrumental I knew I had to hit up Logan. I've been familiar with him and his music for a few years now, and after running into each other at different shows and events we ended up friends. Logan works almost exclusively with his in-house producer Flight (@flightdidit), so I wasn't sure if the song would end up coming together, but I got a chance to show him the beat and he was all for it. "Nothin' New" really feels like some rock star shit to me, and it's become one of my favorite songs to play in the car and during DJ sets.

My mother raised me on great singers. Ranging from Chaka Khan to Robert Plant and everyone in between, I always had an admiration for talented vocalists. Before Testament I had only ever worked with rappers, and I decided when I started to get the project together that I wanted to work on a track without any rap at all. I started looking through people I knew searching for the right voice and got lucky, and found Kaina's soundcloud. We reached out to each other and the collaboration happened very naturally, she's a very talented artist and an easy person to work with. "Again" is a unique song for me and I'm very proud of what it became.

"Home" was the first song we got recorded knowing it'd go on Testament. Although no longer together, Moon and Ju were a duo at the time of recording, and they'd been one of my favorite acts coming out of Chicago. I met Ju through my friend and co-producer Orgena a few weeks after we finished this beat, and after hearing a couple of him and Moon's songs I showed him this beat and told him the concept of the project; Moon and Ju were two of the first people to see the potential in it all. Until further notice this is the last Moon and Ju track to be released, enjoy the stoner ballad here.

There’s something about the energy of this track that feels ancient, it always makes me think of the Aztec pyramids when I listen; Before I had even finished the beat, I knew the song would be called King. I made the instrumental in May of 2014, and Roosevelt the Titan and Reckless C recorded on my 18th birthday about six weeks after. I think it sounds great how the two of them fed off each other’s intensity, and just as the song seems to reach its climax, the strings come in and Ethos ends it with a much different tone. By the time Ethos heard the song and agreed to do a verse, Testament was already a few songs done and I asked him to write keeping the concept/direction in mind. I think Ethos was the perfect artist to end the song, and I’m glad him Roosevelt and Reckless came together to make the piece what it is.

1741 is my most personal and meaningful composition I’ve ever worked on. To make the melodies I sampled a recording of the Vieuxtemps del Gesu, a violin hand crafted by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu in 1741. The video the recording came from was executive produced by my grandfather Geoff Fushi, and the instrument was performed on by close friend Philippe Quint (you can read more about the two of them and the Vieuxtemps here http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/us/20cncviolin.html?_r=1). I finished the beat the same night my mom showed me the original recording, and from the next morning on it felt like the song had a soul of its own. I spent months mesmerised over it, whatever the setting was when I heard the piece it felt like it took me out of body. I feel closer to my grandfather every time it plays, as well as a history stretching back centuries.

While attending a panel put on by Martin Atkins at SAE I met Hugo Lee, an Australian saxophone player spending a semester abroad studying music at University of Illinois. A few days after meeting Hugo I brought him to Glass Tree Studios to work on some music, and "Phoenix" was born. The sax was recorded on one take, and I decided that I wanted to keep his recording as pure as possible, leading to what I consider to be a smooth and captivating listen.
