My vision for Project 1 revolved around how unique and nuanced individuals are, and how the beauty of our nuances helps us paint a broader, more complete picture of humanity when we all work together. However, when we rush to judgement and are overly influenced by outside sources instead of thinking critically, people quickly become polarized. We lose sight of the nuances of humanity when we separate ourselves into incredibly narrow ideological groups, all the while disregarding nuanced perspectives.

For Project 1, the two pillars of sound design I utilized were 'scoring' and 'voice.' The trait I intend to employ is emotion. As a musician, I find musical compositions and emotional experiences go hand-in-hand. Through use of timbre, musical key, tempo, and other factors, composers and artists can easily switch between contrasting emotions. In this project, I intended to compose a piece which starts out complex, while conveying a sense of harmony and cohesion. This represents people all working in unison, despite their differences. Gradually, the piece shifts to convey confusion and disjointedness through a simplified cacophony. This shift represents separation between ideological groups and disregard for other perspectives. Of the two non-musical voices I employ, the first, “Goblin,” represents chaos, disunity, and division. This voice influences rifts and breaks down trust between the left and right hands, leading to the piece’s eventual self-destruction. The second, “Reason,” represents cooperation, unity, and brings the two hands back into harmony by convincing them to communicate and listen to each other.

So a few weeks ago I had this crazy idea to remix Charlie Puth's hit "We Don't Talk Anymore".  I reworked Puth and Gomez using only the original a cappella track, and I added all the instrumentation and effects.

Not for commercial use, just my attempt to be innovative with the electronic tools at my disposal.  Hope you enjoy it :)

SchlossCast Ep. 8 - The Future

This melodic excerpt might sound simple, but it’s often in the simplest sounds where beauty can be found.  For this ten-second project, I recorded myself lightly riffing in the key of D major, moving down the scale, substituting a flat 7 for a major 7 (C instead of C#), suspending on a Dsus4 and a Dsus2, and resolving.  (What I played actually reminds me a lot of one of my favorite choral pieces, entitled Tree of Peace.)  Technical theory aside, this audio is satisfying, calming, and almost seems to “breathe” with a balance of tension and release as the keys are stroked freely.  And if we’re talking about instrument choice…who doesn’t like to hear a piano?  In addition, I come from a very musical background, and the piano I recorded this on has been in my family for four generations (it was originally my great grandma’s).  Not only have I grown up playing this particular piano at my house, but now, I’m the only member of my family who knows how to play it at all.  To me, there’s a feeling of familiarity and sentimentality when I approach the keys, which is arguably beautiful in and of itself.

10 Seconds of Beautiful Sound - Sequencing & Digital Audio

This audio project was created for Sound Design 2, a Creative Technologies graduate school course at Illinois State University.  

For this assignment, I was tasked to find an image of a fictional ship that might be found in a gaming environment, and create an auditory palette that demonstrates how the ship might sound under various conditions or performing various activities.  My chosen ship is the image for this project.

Project 2 - Game Audio - Fantasy Ship - Sound Design 2

This audio story, "Peanut Butter Clusters," was created for Sound Design 2, a Creative Technologies graduate school course at Illinois State University.

This assignment required me to write the story, record the dialogue, apply sound effects, and score the piece with music that matched the vibe of the project.

Project 3 - Audio Story - Peanut Butter Clusters - Sound Design 2

My final project in Sequencing & Digital Audio is a standard pop composition modeled after Charlie Puth’s musical style, specifically his album Voicenotes.  Puth typically uses very warm textures, such as electric pianos and analog synth sounds, and 80s and 90s sounds as a backdrop for his modern pop compositions.

When producing this project, I included a few constraints on techniques I could and couldn’t use.

My first constraint limited the selection of auxiliary drum sounds.  Outside of typical drum set sounds (kick, snare, toms, and hi hats), I restricted myself to only using kitchen sounds (forks, pans, etc.) to create auxiliary percussion parts.  In the composition, you’ll hear a glass pan and spoon clicks.  My second constraint required I only have a maximum of three piano/key synth sounds playing at any time in the song.  I tend to over-layer my synthesizer sounds when I produce music.  Implementing this constraint meant I had to be mindful of my layering habits.  Finally, my third constraint required I include guitar in my song, but the guitar could only be recorded using my iPhone.  Puth recorded guitar in a similar manner when producing “Attention,” one of his hit songs.  I recorded individual notes on an electric guitar, lined up the waveforms of the notes into an arpeggiating pattern, and layered the guitar with a plucky synth sound to give the part more depth.

This sound effect project, "Bad Day," was created for Sound Design 2, a Creative Technologies graduate school course at Illinois State University.

This project required me to tell an original story using only sound effects to push the narrative forward.  No voices or music could be used.
