From of a set of solo cello pieces by 12 composers, written for Rostropovich in honor of Paul Sacher. always the renegade, Boulez not only submitted his late, but also had written it for 7 cellos (ensemble of 6 + 1 solo) instead of just one.

Sonata for Two Violins op. 56, is perhaps the greatest, most kaleidoscopic work ever written for two violins. Apart from demanding a myriad colours and techniques it creates something less like a duo and more like an orchestral score. Unlike many famous works, inspired by the music of other great composers, it seems this Sonata was actually Prokofiev’s response to a poorly written violin duo by an obscure composer which compelled the young Prokofiev to prove to himself that "it had to be possible to write at least fifteen minutes of good music for this small ensemble!".

This is the first movement of the work Divergence.

This movement was generated using spectral procedures of analyzing a recording of a chime and orchestrating the principle components of the chime into the ensemble.
