Going through my archives of old musick I made long ago, I found some I rather like. This is one of them. It was created and recorded in early 1996, just after moving the New York City and into our DUMBO loft. The sound quality is "rough". I was still learning how to make music via MIDI sequencers and I had no ability to multitrack record and only one synth—the E-mu Morpheus (http://www.vintagesynth.com/emu/morpheus.php). I used the MIDI sequencer Cakewalk 2.0 on a "486" PC (4 MB of RAM!). Final tracks were simply recorded direct from the Morpheus to cassette tape. I've tried to clean up and remaster these old recordings, but they are still "a bit rough".

This track "Vast 88", and its companion, "Zlo 88" (get it? Fast and slow?), are in an unusual microtonal or xenharmonic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenharmonic_music) tuning called 88-cet, meaning "88 cent equal temperament" (http://xenharmonic.wikispaces.com/88cET). In other words, unlike our normal 12 note equal temperament, in which the notes are 100 cents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cent_%28music%29) from its neighbors, in 88-cet the notes are 88 cents apart. This scale was invented, or at least studied and popularized by Gary Morrison. "Popularized" within the small, strange world of xenharmonic geeks at least.

The Morpheus synth is capable of being totally retuned—every MIDI note's pitch can be changed to anything you want. I used the wonderful, powerful, free tuning program Scala (http://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/) to retune the synth to 88-cet (actually Scala's creator, Manuel Op de Coul, kindly added support for the Morpheus when I asked).

Here's way too much information about the tuning: 88-cet is a strange scale. There are 1200 cents in an octave, but 1200 is not divisible by 88, so there are no octaves in 88-cet—although the scale's 41st step is very close to 4/1 (two octaves). Some of the scale's steps are very close to consonant intervals, some familiar some less so. Many approximate "septimal" intervals, which can be fun. Here's a few, compared to just intonation (JI) pitch ratios (88-cet's notes never exactly equal a JI ratio but often come close enough to sound about the same—the same is true for normal 100-cent equal temperament): 88-cet's "0th" step is JI 1/1, "unison". The 2nd step is (almost) 10/9, "minor whole tone" or "just minor tone". The 3rd and 5th steps are "septimal" thirds, 7/6 ("subminor third") and 9/7 ("supermajor third"); put another way, the thirds are "more minor than a minor third" and "more major than a major third". They don't make very nice sounding triads but are fun in other ways. The 8th step is almost exactly 3/2, "perfect fifth". The 10th step is a good 5/3 (major sixth). The 11th step is almost exactly 7/4, "harmonic seventh". 7/4 is a great interval—you can't play it on a piano (it's noticeably flatter than a minor seventh) but it is a common "blue note" (example, the last note of the extra bit people sing after "Happy Birthday to You", "...and many MORE!", is a 7/4). 88-cet's 14th step is just over one octave—it sounds bad, like an overly sharp octave. Steps above that can be described "octaved reduced", eg, the 16th step is an octave plus a 9/8 (major second). The 18th step, octave plus 5/4 (major third)—actually noticeably closer to a JI 5/4 major third than 12-note equal temperament. The 23rd step is about 8/5 (minor sixth); 26 about 15/8 (major seventh). Step 31 is a good 6/5 (minor third) plus octave; 33 is a good 4/3 (perfect fourth); 34 is close to 7/5 (septimal tritone, another good "blue note"); and finally, step 41 is very close to 4/1 (two octaves).

The tuning is 17-note-per-octave equal temperament. This scale has very reasonable "perfect" fifths, but no usable major or minor third. The "neutral third" is used extensively. PLEASE download the hi-res mp3 and listen to it. Soundcloud's 128 kbps streaming is utterly bogus for synthesizer music, so if you listen using the playback widget on this page, you won't be hearing the mix in anything like a pristine form!

This piece uses a scale with 31 equal-tempered steps per octave. 31ET has very good triads and 7th chords, so it almost sounds like our familiar 12-note scale, only better. This binaural beat straddles the cusp of Theta and Alpha right at the Schumann Resonance (Earth's primary resonant frequency).  For those who think the Schumann Resonance is shifting, I can offer only an anecdotal account, highly pertinent as it is.

When trying to determine if there is a natural key in which people tend to sing, on my second guess, I successfully matched the one my voice centered on to 7.83 hz (multiplied by 64).  This is with no external influence to set or suggest a key.  There was even a distracting hum of appliances.  I should also mention that I had worked very little with the Schumann Resonance until then.  Take it for what you will.

Both alpha and theta brainwave ranges are associated with creativity.  Theta is known for an association with emotions and the subconscious, alpha more for a relaxed, alert state.  This particular frequency right at the very bottom of Alpha no doubt has some qualities of both, and 7.83 hz in particular is purported to be seen in the brains of those engaging in psychic activities.

These are some hip hop beats I made that have a stereo panning effect that creates a brainwave entrainment. If you don't move around and listen to this audio quietly with your eyes closed, it will synch your brain with the audio and guide your brain into a state where it will tell your body to produce more adrenaline (only for a couple of minutes though, too much is not good for you!).
If you move around or talk, or pretty much do anything besides listen passively, you won't get the brainwave entrainment effect;you will just hear music. If you listen in this way, you should feel a change of consciousness about halfway through the audio program.
