Dave met Bill Baker (JAYHAWKER, SLOWSIDEDOWN, Incision Records) on the mean streets (playgrounds) of Bellingham in the 1970s. They formed a bond that carried them through violence and revenge, attempts on their lives, and classroom behavior that would get a kid expelled and/or heavily medicated today. It was really fun. Later they got into skateboarding, punk, hardcore and Straight Edge, formed bands, put on shows, started record labels, and had various other adventures of the sort you can only have with someone you’ve known forever. And that’s what they talk about here.

Nate sits down with Dave to discuss his early days discovering Punk and Metal in junior high, cutting class, and getting caught up and busted in random acts of vandalism. Jump ahead a few years and a chance meeting at a sandwich shop leads Nate to join the band STATE ROUTE 522 despite not being able to play any instrument. Multiple bands and tours later, time has its way, and life drags Nate from Alaska, to Antarctica, to Portland, Oregon. Desolation at every step. Also, Dave made him play a role in his movie, and Rocky Votolato beat him up onscreen, which is a real point of contention.

After many years away from the States, Lex returns triumphant and shares with Dave tales of international drama and intrigue. Somewhere in there they also find time to go over their meeting in the early days of the Old Firehouse Teen Center, how long one must go to shows before they are allowed to “X up”, how she was asked to join a band based on the color of her hair, and the day the idea for her infamous Pyramid of Hardcore Involvement schematic crystalized in her brain. Along the way Lex also explains various elements of life in Korea and how we possibly might be better off as a nation if we ate bugs, or something.

Dave visits Mr. Edge at his home shortly after he broke his back in a bike accident. Medicated and confined to a wheelchair, Aaron is unable to get away and must endure his own private version of Misery as Dave forces him to relive painful past memories in story form. Tales of being the neighborhood’s only white ninja lead eventually to the obvious conclusion of joining a Hare Krishna cult. And also Straight Edge, because, y’know, it’s his actual name.

Dave and Demian lose track of time and structure almost immediately, which causes Dave to forget to ask Demian how he got the nickname “The Spice” back in the day. Despite that, the conversation does end up going most of the places it needs to go, with particular focus on late-80s skateboarding, politics, conspiracy theories, and ghosts. Everything one might expect, with some great Undertow tour stories thrown in to boot.

Derek and Dave didn’t start out as friends right away, as an offhand comment from Dave regarding one of Derek’s early bands was played up into a serious affront by mutual friend and chaos instigator Matt Matsuoka. That was eventually smoothed over and Dave was able to conquer Derek’s famous resting mean face thanks in no small part to the efforts of Miss Michaelanne Jerome, who pops into the episode to reminisce about their early days causing trouble at various churches and temples across the country. Or maybe just two.

Chris also explains the rules to CHAMPION’s potentially dangerous game “Classic Combinations” which was apparently created in a state of duress while on tour in Germany, as so many things are.

Then they sort of figure out that it doesn’t. Ranae recounts stories from her youth growing up in South Dakota and harrowing tales of intrigue, danger, and her stuntman father’s final exhibition gone horribly wrong. Along the way the obligatory Sasquatch conversations are had and Ranae’s natural skepticism is pleasantly challenged by her own belief.

John and Dave share a love of many things, from Straight Edge to skateboarding to The Cure, to apparently Miss Michaelanne, who makes one of her unplanned drop-ins on the recording to hang out next to John. Those two have also known each other too long, it turns out. “Did you ever hang out at the Fall City park-n-ride?” is an actual question between them, and the answer probably won’t surprise you. Somehow Dave manages to keep the interview on track and his relationship intact despite JP’s intentions, and digs into tales of youthful violence and revenge, breakdancing and graffiti, and life-altering Punk Rock shows in the 80s.

The podcast returns after a break of many months to find Dave sitting down with drummer extraordinaire Eric Kinder. The discussion takes the usual twists and turns and, with the addition of Soto Rebelos in seat #2, some of the hazier details are filled in. Some truly great fight stories pop up in this one, including previously unknown details of an event that was part of Dave’s inspiration for writing THE EDGE OF QUARREL.

In what will likely become a yearly event, Matt and Dave see a new STAR WARS movie in the theater and then offer up a spoiler-filled (and in Matt’s case weed-fueled) review. This time around they present their take on ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story. It’s only been out for about three weeks as this episode is being posted, so if you were one of the last holdouts unsure if this one was for you, hopefully this will help. In a stunning podcast first, Matt and Dave are joined in this episode by guest host April Votolato, who was tricked into appearing with promises of a robot painting Matt offered her years ago. Such drama, on screen and off… How does it all turn out? You’ll just have to listen to know.
