Initially conceived as a folk-pop outfit featuring wistful cello backdrops and swirling walls of guitar-looped noise, No Coast’s line-up has drastically reconfigured itself over the year since the group first started playing shows in Iowa City and the Midwest. Born in a 5x7 storage unit on the outskirts of town to avoid noise complaints, Ben Baumbach’s early acoustic melodies were rough and wild, with a strong preference for shouts and chants over sensible lyrics. The release of No Coast’s first EP, Burr Oak, found many of these songs awash in layers of feedback drones and lo-fidelity fog. With the addition of Noel Nissen (also of The Olympics) on drums, Shawn Akbar on saxophone, a backing vocal section, and a predilection towards synths in the songwriting process, No Coast’s sound has transformed into an eclectic blend of influences which work to challenge what these songs all have in common: a simple, pop foundation. - from Mission Creek Festival Bio.
