The first thing Veyra felt was silence with weight—the kind that pressed against the inside of thought, like a soft hand over a candle flame.

Her vessel slid out of the black between realms without tearing it. It didn’t arrive so much as it agreed to be seen.

It was no ordinary craft.

The Void-Skiff was grown, not built—an arc of meteor-glass ribs and obsidian bark, stitched with silver mycelial thread that glowed faintly like moonmilk. Along its spine hung braided tassels of comet-silk, each strand humming with a quiet, contained storm. The Skiff’s underside was scaled in mirror-lichen plates that reflected the stars… but never the same way twice.

And above it all—folded around Veyra like a halo of invisible wings—rested the Prism Helm.

The Helm was a relic that belonged to no single era. It hovered a finger’s breadth from her brow, a crescent lattice of translucent bone-crystal and amber wire, with tiny drifting motes trapped inside it like fireflies inside a cathedral window. Each mote was a living glyph—a symbol that changed when the universe blinked.

Veyra herself was not human, and never had been.

She was of the Auralith, a tall, long-limbed people whose skin held a faint internal luminescence, like pearly stone warmed by a hidden sun. Her features were elegant and alien—cheekbones sharp as carved shell, eyes black but deep as ink wells, and within the ink: pinpricks of star-salt that rearranged with emotion. Her hair was not hair at all, but a cascade of fine filament strands, shifting between cobalt and violet depending on the angle of memory.

At her shoulder clung her familiar: Threnn, a palm-sized chroma-moth with stained-glass wings. The wings weren’t symmetrical—one side split into triangular panes, the other into featherlike prisms—so every flutter threw a different geometry of color into the air. Threnn’s head was a small lens, and its gaze could drink light and later release it as glowing afterimages.

Ahead: the world.

A vast desert stretched beneath the Skiff, but it wasn’t sand. It was star-memory made physical.

The dunes were composed of polished glass grains and metallic dust so fine it behaved like fog when stirred. Each crest held a faint embedded glow—the imprint of constellations that had once hovered above it. Some dunes remembered ancient star patterns that no longer existed. Other dunes remembered stars that had not yet been born.

They shimmered as if dreaming.

Veyra lowered the Skiff until its shadow kissed the nearest ridge. The ridge responded like a living thing—its grains shivered and briefly arranged into a spiral, then relaxed.
