Light Darkens Upon Us EP is a euphoric psychedelic experience, with each track taking the listener on their own sonic journey. Levantine love for electronics grew from a young age. Through solid arrangements and solid programming, this single becomes a vehicle for reverential music that manages to spill out enough ideas from the artist himself to shake off the high era, allowing it to exist in its own right as credible.

In addition, the album is accompanied by remixes by artists of the stature of David Garcet and Bonnie Spacey, who add power and affirm that desired return to the dance floor.

Nice and dreamy (2021)

Those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern Balearica should know all about Layne Fox, a San Francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 Thieves.

The Bay Area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on Rong Music and Leng, who released their expansive debut album The Sky Is Yours back in 2014.

Now, Fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on Magic Feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005’s Move Me under the Tuffy alias. It’s something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy Italo-disco and horizontal pop.

Fox delivers two contrasting versions of No Runnin’ Away. There’s a Vocal Mix, where Sunny’s icy, atmospheric voice drifts over a chugging mid-tempo groove built around a Moroder-style bassline, swirling electronics, dreamy chords and metronomic beats. Typically, Fox also provides a tasty Dub, where select vocal snippets drift in an out of a delay and reverb heavy mix that also gives increased prominence to his stretched-out synths and late night electronics.

Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley handles remix duties himself, offering a complimentary but notably different interpretation. His version subtly emphasizes the track’s downbeat pop credentials, pushing the vocal to the fore above a sparse electro groove, dreamy pads and flashes of acid-inspired electronics. Think Cold Wave vibes but with actual production values, not pretend ‘mastered on cassette’. It’s the perfect accompaniment to Fox’s hypnotic, head-in-the-clouds original.

Creative endeavours are most often not a thing to be rushed. You let thoughts have their freedom and sometimes it comes naturally, sometimes it doesn’t. The conveyor belt approach applies to physical products, but not the processes of a creator. But what happens if you were to force a deadline to something you hadn’t even started? Would you perform to the utmost of your ability? Would the end product be greater or lesser than that given its own time frame?
Joseph Thomas Price also known as Third Son has written, mixed, mastered and released his debut album in 20 Days, and there forming the title of the work. Based from his home studio, the first note was recorded on the 1st May and the creative process was documented throughout. From the first recorded beats to the live studio tutorial videos including a video call with Pioneer DJ's Rob Anderson in which he discussed how he used the Toriaz Squid as a central ideas machine within the writing process, the end product is a remarkable achievement and released on his Polymath concept label.
The track that we present to you today, his collaboration with the already iconic figure of the worldwide electronic scene, a French-Canadian artist living in London - Chloe Raunet aka C.A.R.

A Ceremony, Undone

Serving as an opening statement for Gusik, ‘A Ceremony, Undone’ approaches the prevalent post-millennial themes of emotional isolation, identity and social alienation by way of a diverse and eclectic music selection with consistent and tangible motifs. Through this the concept of geographic boundaries deconstructs itself through the sentimentality of the multicultural artists featured in this work. Not to be mistaken for an attempt to romanticize melancholia, this mix focuses nevertheless on individual concerns above all else, with a subtle bittersweet closure in mind.
