Italian native Cristina Lazic returns to Rebellion following her recent release on the Souls Vol.2 VA last year. And now the rising star delivers an accomplished three-track EP for the Crosstown Rebels sub-label.

Talking about the release, Cristina explains: “Burning is an EP that will accompany people in a variety of situations - from introspective journeys in moments of reflection, to social gatherings with friends and all the way to the dance floor. It consists of three tracks that contain a mix of minimal sounds with groovy bass, with female / male catchy vocals and unique elements full of surprises.” Delving further into the creation of the EP she reveals: “In Mirror I was inspired to include a guitar tone after listening to the great track “Taff” by Leonidas and Traumer; Jazzy Feeling is the result of an effort to combine minimal with funk and jazz music. Finally, with the lead track Burning I wanted to obtain a happy dance floor sound to make people dance, including unexpected elements, like seventh chords.”

In the title track Burning, a playful bassline drives the track as floaty vocals ride throughout the dreamy layers of chords and percussion. Jazzy Feeling is deep and powerful with a solid bassline, infectious vocals and an inspiriting atmosphere. Last up, Mirror rounds off the EP, once again demonstrating Cristina’s adept skill for creating hypnotic layers, sensual tones and rolling dancefloor music that can also be enjoyed anywhere at any time.

Born in Milan and raised in London, Cristina Lazic started playing the piano when she was six and grew up composing music. Emerging into the spotlight only four years ago, Cristina has performed at iconic clubs and festivals around the world. She also caught the attention of Pioneer DJ Italy, who chose her as an ambassador and example for aspiring female DJs. Her releases can be found on Bondage Music, Creature Records and Rebellion. After his phenomenal debut in 2020, Slovenian House wizard Alex Ranerro returns to the ever delivering Bondage-Music label with a new relishable EP, including remixes from Lola Palmer and the labelheads themselves, Pornbugs. Title track "Fragments"; welcomes us with dabbling and shimmering percussions, accompanied by a cosy warm sub bass and a crispy drum framework. While the buttery tops and flashy FX effects subtly work their way through our hearing, we already sense the first vibrations of the peerless stellar synths unfolding continuously throughout the track. Next up, we have Lola Palmer pleasing us with her very own version of the original. She adds a muffled kick and a drone bassline, turning the track into a matter of deep groove. Smooth piano chords nestle perfectly into this housy roller which is relying on a tasteful selection of lucent hats and twinkling shakers. Finally, the Bondage Favorite pulls a very last treat out of the hat for us. "Encode"; enchants our electronic loving hearts with a groovy bass and subliminal melodies that will get even the last limping leg going. A real driver. Certainly, the Bondage founders Pornbugs do not want to miss the opportunity to give this fabulous EP their very own personal scent. Rustling hats and a strident synthie pad are shaping the sound of this magnificent „Radiation“ remix which comes along with panning stabs and a lush bassline that triggers warm vibrations throughout our body.

Continuing his explorations within house, techno, minimal and beyond, it’s safe to say San Francisco-based DJ, producer and label boss Andrew Rasse, aka Butane remains an artist at the top of his game when it comes to crafting functional, intuitive dance floor material. Kicking off the New Year with yet more classy and quality house efforts, late January sees Rasse deliver Extrasketch’s first output of 2023 as he unveils three fresh cuts in typically slick fashion with his ‘Dirt, Worldwide’ EP.

Lead track ‘Club Foot’ employs a killer organic tech house groove guided by rolling drums and shakers. Winding along effortlessly, the subtly hypnotic, infectious tune shapes up to be a low-key terrace anthem. Next, ‘Voice Inside (Filbert Street Mix)’ veers off into a slightly wonky and off-kilter warehouse trip as fuzzy analog bass patterns merge with warped vocal interjections and skippy percussion for a decidedly mind-meets-body affair. ‘Whatcha Doin’ closes the package on a smoother, dubby note. Harnessing a slightly eerie tension across the track, Rasse deftly drops some ear candy in the form of a cheeky vocal sample while harnessing those signature Butane elements. Another late-night mover in the bag.

Following hot on the heels of her ‘Westpoint’ wibbly chugger for Nervous comes Nickelle with ‘Neo One’ for Jack Said What. 

Nickelle was already part of the JSW family due to playing assorted label nights in London and on the south coast but now, with this release, she is well and truly on the firm.

Brought up in the picturesque environs of the Lake District in the north-west of England, she started sneaking into club nights such as Vague in Leeds and events at The Arena in Middlesbrough while underage. She arrived in Brighton at 18 with just a bag of records and a change of clothes, and never made it home again. 

Nickelle soon scored a residency at The Honeyclub on the seafront and soon began playing other UK clubs such as Turnmills, The Zap, Ministry Of Sound and The Escape. These choice gigs led to residencies at Fabric and The End/AKA in London (for DTPM and Jaded respectively), and then international gigs in far-flung places such as Bali, Indonesia, Bucharest, Rome and Singapore.

In tandem with the explosion of her DJ career Nickelle began producing her own music, releasing on labels such as Slip N Slide, Art & Craft Recordings, Iberian, Bullet:Dodge and Rebirth, and also remixing the mighty X-Press 2. Now, after a short break, she’s writing the next chapter of her career.

‘Neo One’ is a cracking release. Kicking off like a deep tech builder with intricate percussion, ascending minor chord keys soon set the spirit level to emotive. At the start of the second drop it’s almost like the string section of an orchestra has come in: what sounds like a violin tugs at the heartstrings in an almost filmic way, bringing forth a stirring trip. ‘Neo One’ takes its cue from Slam’s seminal ‘Positive Education’ techno classic as it soars heavenwards to close, taking dancers and listeners on a journey through the imagination. 

Progressive house don Nolan ads a bit more percussive clunk on his overhaul, muting the violin sound a tad but elongating it on the main drop so that it kicks back in with hip-wiggling aplomb. The melody line turns into slithery robo-sonics as it advances to close.
