Nils Frahm - Says

I produced this piece for Radio 4's Short Cuts. It features the wonderful Alice Starmore – textile designer, artist, author, lecturer and crofter. Alice is probably the last person in the British Isles to have taken part in the tradition of transhumance – the seasonal movement of people and livestock. It’s a tradition that persists in other parts of the world (in the Alps, for example, animals are still moved each year to their summer pasture) but in the UK, the practice died out long ago.

Only on the Isle of Lewis – where Alice grew up and still lives – did it survive into the 1960s. Every summer, the residents of each village would pack up their belongings, round up their livestock, and make the long journey to out to their own patch of moorland – their àirigh, or shieling – where they’d stay for the whole summer.

The tradition had a practical purpose – it freed up the more fertile, lowland areas to grow the crops needed to sustain people and animals through the long winter – but it was also a deeply cultural practice, reinforcing people’s connection with each other, and with the land. It was also known as a time of great celebration, fun and freedom.

Alice starts by introducing us to the untranslatable Gaelic concept of dúthchas – which underpins the shieling tradition.

Sit back, close your eyes and picture yourself in a mixed woodland by a small pond at dawn. 90 minutes of dawn chorus from 3rd May 2020 edited to 11 minutes. A very faint tawny owl and a couple of mallard can be heard just before first light followed (I'm told by those who know more than me) by robin, blackbird, thrush, blackcap, wren, goldfinch and blue tit with pheasant, herring gull, carrion crow, jackdaw, wood pigeon and moorhen pitching in also.  A pair of swans make a guest flypast at the end. Still some rough edges to smooth out.
