Orchids, the fourth single from Starvhyn’s debut album, features Claire Michelle at the helm of a gender-queer dance track for 2021.

The song pulses and groans, slowly building over its five minute runtime. The four-on-the floor drum and oppressive bass are joined by bright pads, pricking synths, and unpredictable noise. Holding it all together is Michelle’s powerful performance, acting as a human envoy inside the lush digital landscape.

The song is the raw, vulnerable core of the album’s queer themes. It's a journey through the trials of discovering one's gender identity and the beauty of transformation.

This rare Vitesse's song is included as a Christmas Single into the Stuck in the Chimney (More Christmas Singles) compilation on Parasol Records, 2001, which was the label-house of Vitesse (and the Hidden Agenda sublabel), surely one of my favorites bands ever (as noted in my profile). Hewson Chen and Joshua Klein's Ice & Ribbons flows as melancholic and wintry as only they know beginning with that thawing effect and emerging beats. Synths, drum muchine, bass lines and voice evoke snowflakes, wind, trembling lights and decorated Christmas trees.
