Berserkerrrrrr

[from Bandcamp] After my band DAMES recorded our forthcoming EP, the rest of the band went home. Since we'd booked the whole day in advance, Stevie, the engineer, and I stuck around to play with gear in the studio as well as to lay down a few demos. As they set up some studio mics, I wondered about what to play - I was dead tired and didn't know how much more I had in me to record. Turns out, I had 5 songs left - songs that later became The Life of Milarepa.

Inspired by the Tibetan Buddha whose life I'd been studying at the time, these songs illustrate my forays into Buddhist practice. Meditating, escaping samsara, achieving the peace that surpasses understanding - these things in particular had been heavily on my mind when we recorded late that night. Recording was an act of endurance, of meditation, of laying down burdens I'd been carrying too long in hopes of achieving some sort of liberation.

Huge thanks to Stevie Dodge for engineering this project. I literally couldn't have done it without them. Thanks to Jamtown in Philadelphia for hosting us. Thanks to DAMES for the incredible session that precluded this little act. Thanks to my love Beatrix Lee for illustrating the album cover (follow her on on Instagram and X @friezacrane). And thanks as always to my lover and collaborator Nancy Padgett who listened to these songs in my backyard during what feels like a lifetime ago. I've seen the end, and I know it's gonna be a good one.

just thought it'd be cool to take a score like this and try to actualize it based off the minimal instructions of the score itself; my execution admittedly focused mainly on what Knížák left intact and not so much on the negative space created by what's been crossed out - maybe i'll replace the audio with that in mind at a future date
