Iranian Label Noise à Noise is releasing their compilation Noise à Noise 23: Noise Against the Silence in four volumes: Noise and Glitch, Contemporary and Avant-Garde, Ambient and Drone, and Field Recordings. This compilation opens the Western calendar year 2023 with contributions from Iranian artists living in Iran and abroad, and with pieces submitted by colleagues near and far. We wish everyone a year with more peace, more equality, physical and emotional safety, and the right to speak your mind wherever you are.

As of January 17th, 2023, the album is live on Bandcamp. It will be on Spotify, Apple Music, and similar online-music distribution platforms a week to two after the preorder ends on Bandcamp, while excerpts of the pieces are considered as a preview on Soundcloud. Publication of the physical editions for distribution in a limited scale is to be announced in a month.

Noise à Noise 23: Noise vs. Silence (Vol I-IV)

Kerman/Berlin – Noise à Noise is proudly announcing the release of Shahab Jafari’s latest album, The Blind City. This Contemporary Classical music album tells the story of a serene village disrupted by a malevolent force, unfolding its narrative through four captivating tracks.

Shahab Jafari (b. 1992 in Kerman, Iran) is a distinguished art researcher and composer with a specialized Ph.D. in art research, focusing on music. He is renowned for his exploration of diverse sounds using elements of Iranian art and reflecting social and philosophical themes in his compositions. His previous releases include Dream, an EP from 2024, and Kowli, a single also released in 2024.

In the creation of The Blind City, Shahab Jafari took on the role of composer, crafting intricate and impactful soundscapes. The instrumental performances include Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, and Cello by Meysam Marvasti, and piano by Behnam Abolghasem. The album was recorded at Arshavir Studio with the expertise of Navid Shahbeiky. Visual elements were provided by Sayeh Parsaei, who handled painting and illustration, while Sepersa managed the graphic design and visual identity. Creative coding for the video teasers was done by Owrang. Finally, mixing, mastering, and overall project management were overseen by Soheil Soheili.

A special thank you goes to Ehsan Saboohi for his initial guidance in the overall development of the compositions, and to the people at Dezhakam Music Academy for their support throughout this project. I also want to extend my gratitude to my music student, Farshad Karimi, for his valuable assistance with computer score notation.

Iranian sound artist, pianist and interdisciplinary composer, Deniz Tafaghodi (1997), studied B.A in Music at Azad Art & Architecture University of Tehran. She started her career in the music field by learning piano at the age of six. She frequently collaborates with artists from different disciplines ranging from theater, computer game, sound installation to contemporary dance projects. She is also a member of Zerone Duo (an electro-acoustic duo based in Iran) since 2018.

آناهیتا عباسی (متولد ۱۳۶۴) در شهر شیراز به دنیا آمد و فعالیت خود را از همان شهر شروع کرده است. او در سال ۱۳۷۶، برای دنبال کردن مدرک کارشناسی خود در دانشگاه هنرهای اجرایی و موسیقی گراتس به اتریش نقل مکان کرد، دانشگاهی که در آن به مطالعه هارمونی با کلمنس گادن‌اشتتر و کریستیان اوتس پرداخت؛ همینطور دوره درس هارمونی را هنگامی که همکاری نزدیکی با با ژرژ اپرگیس، «فرانک بدروسیان» و «فیلیپ لرو» داشت، با «بئات فورر» و «پیرلوییجی بیلونه» گذراند. او از سال ۱۳۹۵ در سن‌دیگو آمریکا زندگی می‌کند و هم‌اکنون در حال تکمیل دکتری آهنگسازی به همراه استاد راهنمای خود «رند استایگر»، در دانشگاه کالیفرنیا، در سن‌دیگو می‌باشد.

Anahita Abbasi (world citizen-1985) was born and raised in Iran, Shiraz. In 2005 she moved to Austria and pursued her undergrad at the University of music and performing Arts Graz, where she studied music theory with Clemens Gadenstätter and Christian Utz &amp; composition with Beat Furrer and Pierluigi Billone; while working closely with Georges Aperghis, Franck Bedrossian, and Philippe Leroux. Since 2014, Abbasi has resided in San Diego, USA, and is currently finishing her Ph.D. in composition under the supervision of Rand Steiger at the University of California San Diego.

Nilufar Habibian is a composer of acoustic and electronic music, an award-winning qanun-player and an improviser based in London. Alongside concert music, her interdisciplinary collaborations have included scores for contemporary dance and film. She received her BA in Music from Royal Holloway University of London and her MA in
Composition from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the UK. Recent works have been performed, among others, by Plus Minus, EXAUDI, Hypercube، Rarescale Flute Ensemble and Psappha Ensemble. In her music, she tries to investigate and express human conditions through sound and explore new sounds that carry and convey multiple meanings, emotions and characters.

02 - Nilufar Habibian - Story Of Ms. And Mr X

This piece is composed by "Suicide Twin", an active electronic-music artist from Tehran, who has a tendency to experimental and techno music; he has experience in playing the drums. He has sent this piece for the compilation, which includes a smooth piece, unlike his other compositions that involve industrial and noise music. Name of his music project is an alibi for brinnig up the awareness on suicide, and this can be recounted as an anti-suicide act in this sense.

این قطعه توسط «سویساید توئین» هنرمند موسیقی الکترونیک تجربی فعال در شهر تهران ساخته شده که گرایش خاصی به موسیقی تجربی و موسیقی تکنو دارد و همینطور تجربه نواختن ساز درام را از زمان گذشته به همراه دارد. او برای اولین بار در این فصل قطعه‌ی آرام موسیقی امبینتی را ارسال کرده که متفاوت با قطعه‌های دیگر این هنرمند هست که عموما آمیخته با لحنی از موسیقی تکنوی اینداستریال [صنعتی] و موسیقی نویز هستند. نام پروژه‌ی این هنرمند هدف آگاهی رسانی درباره‌ی معضل «خودکشی»، دارد، و می‌توان گفت این پروژه یک حرکت برای اطلاع‌رسانی و جلوگیری از این پدیده‌ی منفی است.

Vesal Javaheri (b. 1998) started playing the Classical Guitar with #KarinaKimiaei at the age of 10 and continued with #PedramFalsafi, #BabakValipour, and #EileenArjmand. Since 2018, he has been learning Electronic Composition with Kiavasch Saheb-Nasagh. Some of his activities include sound designing for the theaters "THERE WILL BE BLOOD", "NAGAHAN HA'AZA HABIBOLLAH", "NASAKH", "DREAMLAND", "PEARCE SISTERS", "ANTS", and four private performances (accompanied by painting and storytelling)". He has also participated in online masterclasses of #SarahBellereid and #LorenzoLevy. He is currently designing the interface for some future performances.

About the piece:

‘Requiem'' is a #concrete-music piece, using the combination of #water and other recorded #sounds. To produce different frequencies of water sound, the #composer prepared glasses with different amounts of water and then poured certain amounts of water into each of the glasses. The resulting #sound is used as the main element of the piece.

قطعه‌ی "رکوئیم" [مرثیه] یک اثر #موسیقی_کانکریت بوده و با استفاده از کنار هم قرار گرفتن #صدای_آب و اصوات ضبط شده‌ی دیگر ساخته شده است. در این اثر، برای تولید فرکانسهای مختلفِ صدای آب، ابتدا لیوان‌هایی با حجم‌های گوناگون آب تهیه و سپس مقادیر مشخصی از آب به هر یک از این لیوانها ریخته شد. صدای حاصله از این عمل به عنوان عنصر اصلی اثر بکار گرفته شده است.

About the piece:
Mmmm-te is result of Collaboration between Amirali Ghasemi & Mohamad Golabi, where Amirali recites one of his poems and Mohammad has arranged and designed an audio environment in which the spoken words can be sensed in an ambiguous yet familiar way.
The experimental poem juxtaposed various vocabulary from a wide range of disciplines and this is what is happening with the Mohamad’s layered soundscape. 


درباره‌ی اثر:
مممم - تِ حاصل همکاری امیرعلی قاسمی و محمد گلابی است، جایی که دکلمه‌ی امیرعلی از شعر خودش با تنظیمات و طراحی های محمد در هم می‌آمیزد تا کلمات ادا شده در بستری مبهم و در عین حال آشنا کنار هم چیده شوند. شعر تجربی که دستمایه‌ی این اثر شده واژگانی از عرصه‌های مختلف را بر هم می‌نشاند چنانچه منظره‌ی صوتی لایه‌لایه‌ای که محمد گلابی ترسیم می‌کند، این واقعه قابل ردیابی است.

03 - Mohamad Golabi & Amirali Ghasemi - Mmmm-Te

Aspects vs Things is a two-act choral composition for four sopranos and four altos, using vocal techniques including articulation of isolated consonants, syllabic singing, gasping, and spoken word. The specific expressive techniques require deconstruction of words into shorter syllables and single letters, indicating the struggle to express. The piece is specifically meant to represent suppression of women's voices, and for this purpose incorporates quotations from iconic texts as “mocking” devices; such as Thomas Wilson’s The Arte of Rhetorique (1560) and Wallace Craig’s The Expressions of Emotions in Pigeons (1909-11).

02 - Bahar Taheri - Aspects vs. Things: ACT II

It all began to the sound of man's howling darkness, with an insatiable thirst for progress,
a symphony of human emotion immersed itself in the erratic waves of machinery, slowly human love metamorphosed into mechanical logic.
The engine's turbines revved up while the friction crumpled iron.
Man surrendered to this new construct of mechanical slavery whilst the invisible creatures of the great city resonated in vibration.
The immortal machine encompassed all but fear of destruction. It took pleasure in death. In the void it swam, swam with no remorse.

So it was decided! These turbulent and melancholic waves of death would suffocate everything in their mist through a sharp silent wind. It was final.

Sam Eyvaz - Seven minutes and twenty-seven seconds

Sam Eyvaz became associated with music at a young age, starting out as a viola player in symphonic and contemporary orchestras, soon he got connected to the Underground indie scene in Tehran and became a Electro-Punk drummer, in 2014 he joined Langtunes, the band from his hometown.

He has presented different Iranian artists and contemporary musicians to the art-scene in Berlin under the name of  Tehran On Their Ground and Co- curated exhibitions and electronic music events with Berlin based community Hoerbild. Currently he is working on music production, Live performance and Curating contemporary music and new media art Festival “Future East Festival” as well as collaborating with different artists.

همه چيز با صداى زوزه تاريك انسان تشنه به خلق و پيشرفت آغاز شد،
سمفونى احساسات انسانى در ميان امواج غرنده ماشين آلات ساخته دست او غوطه ور شد و آرام آرام به نقطه گذر از عشق به وصال منطق رسيد
توربينهاى غرنده ماشين قدرت گرفت و خش و خوش اصطحكاك آهن شكفته شد،
انسان احساس خويش را برده ماشين ساخته دست خود كرده بود.همه جاصداى موجودات ناميراى شهر بزرگ طنين انداز بود.
ماشين ناميرا همه چيزداشت جز ترس از نابودى و لذت مرگ. ، پس تصميم بر ان شد كه امواج مطلاتم و ماليخوليايى مرگ همه چيز رو در گرد باد خاموشى خفه كند و كرد.

01 - Sam Eyvaz - 7 minutes and 27 seconds

Noise à Noise is proudly presenting “Chaos” (album) by Vesal Javaheri. It is the debut album by the artist, a pure electronic music album. The digital downloads will be available via Bandcamp on June 9th, also excerpts are to be available on soundcloud prior to the release on all music distribution platforms in two weeks. Unfortunately it is now impossible to provide international physical album sale on Bandcamp due to new regulations that triples the expenses for post. 

Vesal Javaheri (1998), is a Classical guitar player; he has received education from Karina Kimiaei, Pedram Falsafi, Babak Valipour, and Eileen Arjmand. Noise à Noise is by definition a truly independent and artist-run label and community for experimental and noise music artists. The label have so far published more than a dozen of compilation albums so far (quarterly since 2019, double disk albums for some seasons) in addition to host a small roster of artist albums regardless of all the negative impacts of COVID-19 on human lives during its outspread.

Vesal Javaheri - Gehenna (2min excerpt)

silo portem is a UK-based experimental music duo and married couple, Si & Gillie Young. Drawing on a rich seam of contemporary classical music, B-movie soundtracks, experimental electronica, industrial and dark ambient music, they mash, twist and merge samples with their own field recordings to create multi-layered music that defies categorisation. 

Around four years ago, their chance discovery of the work of Iranian composer, Arshia Samsaminia, on Soundcloud marked the start of a long and fruitful collaboration with Arshia, who not only kindly provided a lot of source material for them to work with, but also inspired the title to their album “Samsaminia”. He later introduced them to two more composers who co-host the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival, Idin Samimi Mofakham and Martyna Kosecka. Recorded during the 2020 Lockdown, their album “LC-20” was the result of their collaboration with all three composers, which also featured sounds contributed by two American artists, Michael Vallone (aka “The Tara Experiment) and singer/harpist Heidi Hart. Arshia also introduced them to Noise-à-Noise, who featured two tracks recorded in the same lockdown sessions on two compilations. 

Although they have since gone on to record a huge volume of new material and collaborated with several more renowned artists, as they explain, they wanted to return to their Lockdown collaborators for this compilation album.

“When Soheil Soheili got in touch to ask if we’d be interested in contributing to this latest compilation for Noise-à-Noise, Iran was already very much in our minds, with all the terrible events occurring there lately, so we really felt the urge to get involved. We had such wonderful memories of our Lockdown collaborations and we thought what better way to contribute, than to create some new music using samples of music from two of Iran’s finest contemporary composers. So we dug out the same sample set that we had used during lockdown, with sounds from Arshia, Idin, Martyna, Michael and Heidi and recorded around an hour of new material late on the 19th of December 2022. Unsurprisingly given the times, the result was full of tense emotion, so we worried whether Soheil would enjoy the short taster clips we sent from the improvisation, especially as we had already gone way past the end of November deadline! We were delighted that he said that he loved them and could fit something into any of the four categories of the compilation. And as we were so late in the day and he wanted to fill up the remaining space, he suggested he’d put a track on each of the four discs! 

So we set about selecting four clips that seemed to work with the four themes of the compilation: 

Our first piece for the first volume of this compilation (Track 1 for the Noise collection) "Surveillance State": The mad machine-like sounds of this track reminded Soheil of Big Brother, so “Surveillance State” seemed a good choice

ALI BALIGHI is an experimental composer. His works are mostly based on traditional Iranian folk music, with a tendency of also exploring microtonality and new instrumental perspectives. His compositional background also includes a wide variety of symphonic, chamber, and solo instrumental works; music for theater productions; and theme music for film and television. Beyond composition, he also teaches music in the university, an activity that includes a wide variety of courses including cello performance, music theory, sight singing, ear training, musical form.

Ali received his Bachelors of Music in cello performance from the Tehran University of Art, where he graduated with highest honors. His teachers and mentors include Hamidreza Dibazar (Dean of Faculty of Music at the Tehran University of Art), Sharif Lotfi (the university's former Dean), Mostafa Poortorab, Karim Ghorbani (a well-known Iranian cellist), Majid Esmaeeli, Ildin Ahmadinejad, Keyan Emami, and Maziar Heydari. His initial compositional studies began with Kiawash Sahebnassagh and Mohammadreza Azin, and he has also participated in masterclasses with Ahmad Pejman.
Ali has also worked as a University Instructor of Music at the Elmi-Karbodi of Alborz, Azad University, Tehran Conservatory of Music where he has taught a wide variety of courses including cello performance, music theory, sight singing, ear training, musical form, and a beginner course in music composition.

علی بلیغی نام هنرمند آهنگساز موسیقی تجربی است که آثارش بر پایه موسیقی سنتی و فولک ایران، با گرایشی به کاوش در زمینه‌ی میکرو تونالیته و چشم‌اندازهای سازبندی نو نوشته شده است. او قطعه‌های فراوانی ساخته است، که در طیفی بین موسیقی سمفونی، مجلسی و قطعه‌های تکنوازی نوشته شده‌اند، این قطعه‌های همچنین در طیفی در بین موسیقی برای صحنه تئاتر و فیلم و تلویزیون مورد استفاده قرار گرفته‌اند. او از مدتی نزدیک به پنج سال پیش نائل به دریافت جوایزی برای آهنگسازی قطعه‌های خود شده است.

Arshan Najafi (b. 2001) is a Composer, Sound Artist, Visual Artist and Poet. He started playing the Violin at the age of ten and later decided to study Kamancheh (Persian Spike Fiddle) with  Saba Alizadeh. 
His piece, “Transgression in Common City” for solo Flute was one of the selected pieces for Petrichor Records “Call  for Young Iranian Composers” that led to some private lessons with Chaya Czernowin, Reza Vali, Arshia Samsaminia  and Mohammad Amin Sharifi. 
His pieces have been presented and published by Spectro Centre for New Music, Noise à Noise records, Petrichor  Records, Unexplained Sounds Group, Cold Spring Records and XOR Space. His debut book “Twenty Wrong Turns” was published by Aso Publications in the summer of 2022 in Tehran.

Kian Hossein is a composer and sound-designer from Tehran, Iran. He started to learn music in 2006 by receiving piano lessons. He gradually became interested in electronic music and sound design and spent portions of his free time to experiment and self- study. He discovered his passion for contemporary music and composition after starting to work as a professional sound artist and started to study under the provision of Nima Atrkar Rowshan and Ardavan Vosoughi. Yet his works have been performed at various events ranging from music festivals to theatrical performances. As one of the main label artists, Kian published his debut solo album ‘Non-’ on Noise à Noise in 2022, and he is now preparing a sequel-album which is going to be promoted for release here and in a few days.

‘Cassette Culture’ is the result of the production/ reproduction and tracking process. The piece was recorded and mixed (digitally), and was recorded on a cassette and been played-back to be recorded again using digital technology, all in order to add the layer of warm sound that we all know and remember from the days of magnetic tapes (cassettes)..

Hanna Mesgari (b. 1998) is an Iranian musician who is now based in Paris. Hanna started her career as a Tar player and Studying Iranian traditional music fundamentals. In 2016, she was accepted to Iranian traditional music program at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran. After she completed her undergraduate program, in the winter of 2022, she immigrated to France to continue her academic studies. At that time, she met Alireza Farhang and this meeting led her to become interested in electronic music. She took a short course with Alireza Farhang and right after that she was accepted in the Electroacoustic composition major at the Paris Conservatory (Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris). She is now completing her training courses in the aforementioned conservatory.

This sound-piece deals with the different hazards that we may face in our lives. We sometimes face extremely difficult events that we perceive as insurmountable, events that may make us very helpless taking the power to decide from us. The only solution to this insoluble equation often lies in time. Life is also punctuated by small, simple everyday pleasures, but the fleeting nature of these prevents us from appreciating them at their true value. Perhaps we should let ourselves be carried away by time and life, entrusting our fate to the hands of destiny.

(re)generations is a sonic archetype for growth. A “Birkinian-Bodleyan” definition of complexity was used:

“Complexity is understood in terms of the quantity, order, and variety of musical elements or patterns”
(Guy Birkin/Sun Hammer “Complexification,” 2015).

Adding in the variables: visual elements*, increase*, and time*; six iterations were generated along one composition, evolving from simple (seed, sperm, spore) to complex (plant, animal, fungus).

Includes archaeological sonic research of a modified Vito Leblanc alto sax (ca. 1980) [body, mouthpiece, and reed] that belonged to Chem XP’s (Chaz’s) late father, Clem Washington. One interpretation of the artist’s moniker can be seen as a portmanteau of his and his father’s names. His father suddenly died when the artist was 15, leaving behind little but an old saxophone from abandoned dreams in Gonzales, Louisiana (along with countless memories). The artist formed a makeshift neck for the saxophone from a recycled water hose, allowing his ancestors to breathe through this project—with the help of a little LFO.

Shahab Jafari is an Iranian composer known for his innovative approach to classical music, blending Persian influences with contemporary soundscapes. His music explores profound themes of human experience, reflecting on social and philosophical ideas. He has recently released his debut album on this label, in addition to his self-published singles and EPs.
This single features the talents of Meysam Marvasti on violin, viola, and cello; Sayuri Shafiei on clarinet; Shaghayegh Sadeghian on flute; and Farshad Karimi on piano. Navid Shahbeiky served as the recording supervisor, while Shahab Jafari and Soheil Soheili handled mixing and post-production. The stunning artwork is by Ojan Shirozhan, and the video material and teaser production were handled by Ali Balighi and Mehrdad Irani.

Shahab Jafari - I Am Keeping My Eyes on the Road for You

Zhoobin Askarieh (b. 1973) is an instructor and player of native #woodwind instruments and the founder-member of #PILDAM, a #groovy, tribal-dance project from #Tehran. M. Ali. Kafashan a.k.a Ali Sasha (b. 1986), is a composer, arranger and #DJ , he also has experiences for the #music stage throughout the past decade. Together, they have infused a music with the elements of #experimental #electronic, #ambient music and #noise music along with a #spiritual feeling of #acoustic instruments most notably the “Didgeridoo”, it is characterized as a #post-folk, #drony music release. Sharing the #spiritual feeling that they experience with their music is their cause behind releasing their works. “Beyond Tribes” implies a state in which humans are free from the worldly material, and their privileges; it ultimately includes our racial and ethnic groups; an unknown state in which all people are equal. So this is possible that they used the title “Beyond Tribes” to refer to  “after-life” without being too harsh on the choice of words. It is #scheduled to be published on Noise à Noise on 24th of March, 2020. This quadraphonic piece for two computers and a turntable is made by mixing the pure and processed sounds of locked grooves (the inner groove on a vinyl record in the form of a closed loop, which traps the tonearm and needle, preventing it from entering the label area).
These loops are not exactly the same each time they are played, because of some condition changes(grooves damage, dust,cartridges,needles,etc.)
So this piece will change in each performance, even though it has a specific music sheet in ABAَ form.
The poly-rhythmic part turns into an ambient space, then back to the variations of the first part.

Kamyar Behbahani - Transformation

SpectroDuo started to work in 2013 in a field of electroacoustic experimental art. Ensemble consists of two composer-improvisers, Martyna Kosecka & Idin Samimi Mofakham, who use their classical musical training in working on avant garde and experimental sound projects, combining the experience in sound coming from Orient and Occident. Their music focus lies in drone, noise, beating phenomena, glitch, field recording transformation, microtonality and oriental modalities in particular. Except electronics, they use piano, saxophone as well as Iranian and Polish traditional instruments. Self-made visuals, some of them controlled live, have base in glitch art, distortion and binary operations.

Shahin Souri a.k.a Rhonchus.(b.1994, Tehran), is a musician. He started learning music on classical guitar when he was 10, he then attended the classes in the conservatory of music in Tehran to learn Jazz guitar, which he later (in 2013) resigned. He then turned to making techno music, his project is called "Rhonchus". He produces both rhythmical pieces and ambient/ drone music under this alias.
