@StookiSound are one of the UK's biggest exports in the global industry of trap. They're both London residents meaning their interpretation of the genre is equally as Dalston as it is Dirty South. But y'know, trap isn't a new thing, it's been existing in a more rudimentary form since 36 Mafia started popping collars so it's fair game to anyone. Stooki have developed the genre into a one night stand between Southern US hip-hop and ADHD electronica and in the process created one of the biggest hits from this side of the Atlantic, "Ball So Hard" - a collaboration with fellow UK trapite, Hucci. That lead to a US tour that saw them joining their own mosh pits and LOLing at our British weather from afar. We caught up yesterday to talk Pokemon, being jetlagged and the problem with current trap. Oh, and there's an awesome half hour mix alongside as always.

Touching Bass: Stooki Sound

‘Mixtape_01’ is the debut drop from Vienna-based ssolve, and a low key hit of the reset button on a range of electronic musics. Reconstituting strewn sounds from club nights and noise gigs, ssolve’s fresh sound takes in liberated dark beats from gqom, kaleidoscopic neoperro, along with guttural industrial throbs (and screams). ssolve moulds these pieces into a fresh little world of heady glocalised bass, beats, and bombast. Behind the mixtape’s sounds lie years of experience ghost-writing, producing, and sound-designing for a range of projects.

Finally let loose, unconstrained, ssolve’s tentacles blossom across cinematic granules of thudding light on ‘Ultra Forever’, sculpt an intimate ambient prayer on ‘Waves’, or slice samples into visceral dancefloor-ready riddims on ‘RYTM F’, ‘RYTM C’, and ‘RYTM D’.

Born in Germany, ‘89 to a Namibian/German Household, ssolve has lived in Vienna for over a decade. ‘mixtape_01’ was co-created with Enesi M., Ragnheiður Erla Björnsdóttir, and Ernst Lima.

I found their artwork through a talented artist/producer which I’m excited to later announce on the series. 

Inspiration was also taken from my recent walks up towards Canada Coombe, so nice to see the place fall into the colours of spring.

A signature sound: it's the bullseye that every artist strives to grasp within their career and something that Montreal's @Kaytranada has managed to achieve already, aged 20. Swirling together neo soul, hip-hop and elements of trap into the same audio mixing bowl has produced some pretty delicious results for the Haiti-born beatsmith, especially on his refixes of Janet Jackson and Jill Scott. For this Touching Bass, Kaytra slipped together some of his fave tracks before we nattered on about bad barbers, Boondocks and condiments.
