Norma Waterson has died and i'm a bit stunned. This is the Watersons singing Idumea (which i would pronounce eye doo 'may ah) . One of my first connections with her and her family. knowing that song. it is one of the first ... three shape note songs i learned.

This is a recording of Elliza Carthy, norma's daughter, and my old bandmate Tim Eriksen, singing a rendition of Idumea at the Sage, maybe about... 12 yrs ago? thirteen... more and continued connections.

2) arrival 

Call from trombone on open notes- eerie rumours of coming 

armies announced by brass elicits sparse guttral noise from indigenous inhabitants (choir)
 
begin with fear, gnashing of teeth, wailing as much the fear of the unknown as fear of invasion. Gradually a conversation starts and interaction eventually gives way to consonance.
end by long flat notes followed by howls from maz across lake
audience move to sculpture.

represents settlement of Romans which eventually breaks down - (going stir crazy) 

starting from any point on the mosaic 3 take a snippet from your 

individual no place like home phrase and repeat it slowly according 

to the direction of travel along the mosaic < = attack  increase 

sharply in volume then off or  > = decay decrease sharply in volume 

then off 

On change of direction read text from book until enough text has been 

read ( your choice) then return to pattern. Vertical axis denotes 

pitch -when travelling up or down pattern (raise or lower pitch 

accordingly) 

faster tempo
then on first 'there's no place like home' all move to reading of 

pattern as before but faster and on change of direction 'there's no 

place like home' phrase increasingly frenetic to end 

end one by one. Maz leaves and commences on part 4 

4) Marjoram

Maz leaves milecastle by back door moves along the sill, commences 

reading sapphic verse species lists joined one by one by other choir 

members in synchrony end of piece this breaks down as choir disperse.  Jane remains in milecastle and sings marjoram text free overlaying choir and continues to sing until choir have dispersed and are faint.

Sodium Orange to Red Shift (sanctuary art space)

The Noize Choir is a performance ensemble that was formed in 2011 by Newcastle based artists Lindsay Duncanson and Marek Gabrysch. It involves a loose collective of noise enthusiasts with a common desire to use the human voice free of the traditional restraints of typical choral settings, language or musical notation. Their work is based on a shared fascination with science, culture and landscape. They indulge in phenomenological explorations of museum collections, or imaginings of our geological past. Replicating and experimenting with the sound of machines or the natural world, Noize Choir continually find ways to push and pull the idea of what a choir can be. Noize Choir have composed and performed in French churches and on Austrian radio, at the Baltic Centre for contemporary arts, The Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle Upon Tyne, and the Grade II listed Preston Bus station.
