In the summer of 2011, my dear friend (& brilliant hit songwriter), Mitzi Dawn, shared a lyric with me that I’ll knew I’d never forget. 
It was simple but still so poignantly profound. 
The line was - “Love is blind... maybe that’s why it can’t find me tonight.” 

I couldn’t believe that hadn’t been said in a song yet. 
For the next couple years.... I tried fitting that line into hundreds of writing session ....But it never felt right. 
A few more years passed, but still no melody could hold the cumbersome cadence of Mitzi’s timeless chorus. 
Luckily I got unlucky in love with a soulless singer from Los Angeles who preyed on my sympathy & played my heart like a symphony. 
For the 4th time I KNEW I’d found “the one”. 
🤦🏻‍♂️ 

She ruined my 35th birthday, just two days before my first performance on The Voice. 
Then, after a whopping ZERO-chair-turn... I was sent home to face the music, so to speak. 

It was in that moment of hopelessness that Mitzi’s timeless chorus found a melody... I just had to hurt enough to hear it. 

I sang the chorus of Love Is Blind at the top of my lungs, over and over, belting it like a drunken stepfather. (Inside joke about my ex-stepdads belt) 🤓


A few months later I added the finishing touches to the song with Peyton Taylor & Adam Neilson, then Adam & I tracked the vocals at his place.  

Adam built this track around my vocal... which was a first for me. When I heard it back for the first time I knew we had a really special song. And I also knew who was going to have to produce my vocals for the rest of my life! Adam Neilson is the most brilliant & bad ass pop producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist I’ve ever met! 


I hope you enjoyed the tale of “Love Is Blind”.  


It’s one of my favorite songs. 
Because if it weren’t for the heartache - I never would’ve found the melody.
