"Metals Heartland," incorporating some metallic percussion, depicts the area sometimes pejoratively referred to as the "Rust Belt" (Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Eastern Illinois). It has parts that are factory-like and some that are beautiful and pastoral.

"From the Hudson" represents the vibrancy of Times Square, taking the listener on a journey across the Hudson, on through New Jersey. The movements may be performed Westward (I-V) or Eastward (V-I), so this functions as the either the opening movement or the closing one.
