At the idyllic Splore Festival in New Zealand last February, a collaboration between two performing international artists was born. A plan was hatched by Mikee Tucker of Loop to bring the world beats of New York-based DJ & producer Nickodemus together with the Jugalbandi vibes of the Maharaj Trio from Varanasi, India. The result is The Maharaj Project: 001 – a blend of traditional melodic improvisation from India and the organic electronic beats of Nickodemus.

Each song was recorded live in one-take in Auckland with legendary engineer and former bass player for Cat Stevens, Bruce Lynch, over two sessions.

Vikash Maharaj and his sons Prabhash and Abhishek make up the Maharaj Trio – a North Indian musical family from Varanasi, whose musical tradition stretches back 500 years. With Vikash playing sarod, Prabhash on tablas and Abjishek on sitar, the trio play a unique style of improvised Indian classical music with elements of traditional jugalbandi. Well known as a producer and DJ, Nickodemus has been travelling the world since the mid-90’s.

Tracks one through four feature the Maharaj Trio showcasing their traditional sound which has seen them tour the world. Tracks five and six feature the Trio collaborating with Nickodemus, who brings his dance-floor perspective to the trio’s ancient ragas.

The Maharaj Project: 001 showcases the merging of two musical cultures, and two artists renowed as innovators in their field.

Sol Selectas first release of 2018 welcomes Mark Alow from Spain to the family. This paranormal EP will take you to the root of your animal instincts, where the Golden Tiger lives. The voices in particular will evoke your wildest soulful emotions, while the deep tech grooves will cause uncontrollable movement in your body. 
In Marks own words these songs are  "a tool to unite humanity, music that invites meditation, and make us feel free. They also make us aware of our wild essence, and encourage us to live in harmony with nature."  Another Spanish friend of Sol Selectas - Uner - transforms “Golden Tiger” into an epic 11 minute psychedelic trip, reminding us of his early days on Visionquest & Cadenza Records. The slow building adventure climaxes with a full string ensemble, surrounding the vocals with a blanket of pure bliss. 
Mexico's Robbie Akbal remixes “White Tusk” into a sensuous deep house affair, with lush pads and chords, enhancing the dub-wise vibrations and positive mental attitude of the original.  
The artwork by Helia Jamali portrays your inner Golden Tiger wandering through a celestial land of pyramids.

"En la historia, siempre se reproducen los mismos errores, como si fuese un ciclo. Los errores siempre son los mismos. De la misma manera que en una pelea, es muy difícil saber quién ha empezado, y un golpe siempre tiene una explicación: al final, no importa quien ha dado el primer golpe, ni quién es responsable, porque los dos se hacen daño (que sean 2 niños peleándose o los Palestinos/Israelitas, o en Syria o Trump con Kim Jung, Russia etc....).

Me doy cuenta de esto ahora, pero quizás ha pasado desde siempre. No sabemos si los primeros hombres, antes de la civilización, vivían en paz y armonía o si ya había guerras e injusticias. Nadie estaba ahí, así que nadie puede decir si era diferente o no en esa época. Lo único que sabemos es que queda el dolor de las guerras, de las muertes y de los conflictos. Pero este dolor parece que solo dura poco, y que al día siguiente se repiten los mismos errores ("una resaca").

Al final, parece que nuestra única manera de seguir y de mejorar es cambiando nosotros mismos, y perdonando a los demás por sus errores. Es la única manera de romper este ciclo."
