What Is Ambient Anyway?

draft(1) was recorded during a particularly strange depressive episode that was also sadly, familiar. Unapologetically wailing fuzz and overdrive try to make their peace with the rumbling, crackling, almost lo-fi chords that are barely even echoes of notes that were never there to begin with. Somehow this piece represents all the things I'm feeling: an over-zealous, loving, brat of a child trying to make their peace with the remnants of dreams and memories and all that reality could never be. Purposeful and calculated doses of dissonance are a small price to pay when they act as the perfect mirror to what lies within this brain. Every once in a while, a note breaks down, or just the lead part itself falls apart, or disintegrates. Tiny glimpses of hope, too far apart. The (by now) noisy monster breathing in the background seems to have taken over by now, weighing everything down, somewhere, my back cracks; remember silence? There is tension in the strings, the pulling notes might as well be the result of someone plucking my (by now) wrinkled forehead. No room for percussion here; please just leave the strings be. Time is such an uncertain thing anyway. There is what seems like a stronger hope from the child towards the end there, but soon drowned out, suffocated and crushed by the monster in the background. The monster ultimately takes the stage for just a second before an almost abrupt end. I'm not sure if this is a draft or if it is already perfect for how well it seems to have captured my mental state. This is me: part-monster, part-child, trying to breathe again -nomadicastronaut
