Stepping out into the Indie Electronic limelight, Montreal’s @HOKImusic release their debut single ‘Almost Home’. The collaborative project fuses Varti Deuchoghlian’s diverse experiences as a producer with Australian vocalist Brent McCormick’s powerful songwriting. With nearly two decades of combined experience and musical exploration, including former metal and trance projects, the duo collides in the form of HOKI. Instrumental performance and emotion-packed lyrics are at the forefront of the HOKI sound, which represents the unique ability of electronic music to draw from vast arrays of influence and inspiration. Their first single, Almost Home, begins with a soothing intro that builds into a steady deep beat, slowly rising and falling with gorgeous guitar tones. The tough nuances of love are the focus of McCormick’s endearing vocals, which melt with the melody to create a beautiful, emotional ballad.

As somebody always at the forefront of fresh emotive productions, Clarian was a natural fit to remix HOKI’s Almost Home. The enigmatic musician is a name synonymous with heart bending melodies, imaginative synth work, and progressive collaboratives. Never one to conform to the industries desires, Clarian has been introducing fresh influences to the scene through out his storied career. By injecting energy into the groove, Clarian invites Almost Home into the club scene. Primed for sunset serenades and dance floors brimming with emotion, this rework is the perfect representation of Hoki’s promise and Clarian’s storied ability to create magic moments.

Welcome to the 27th edition of Undercurrents, this time with my special guest from Amsterdam, Marc de Koning, with whom I connected a few years ago through music and sharing each other's work :) 

Marc began his musical journey at the young age of 15, with a deep appreciation for deep, energetic, progressive house and melodic techno. He’s had support from dutch pioneer, Dimitri Kneelers, and collaborated with the well-loved and wonderfully talented Luke Santos from Argentina on a track that was charted by Hernan in his top 20 in 2014. With a residency at Recycle Lounge and a release on Paul Hazendonk’s imprint, Manual Music, he also has a new podcast series called Heartbeat for which he did an official launch at ClubNL on July 12th....and I was fortunate to play that amazing night for my first gig in Amsterdam! Fresh out of the camper is Joep Mencke’s Mataka Ep. After the success with his debut Asiri last year, we have been hooked on Mencke’s sound. With two solid originals and an adventure of a remix by the label bosses unders & Noraj Cue, Mataka delivers.


Tum sounds like you’re on a boat on tranquil water floating into a mysterious world full of wonders. Its dark, yet light. The mist makes you want to doze off but the claps, conga’s and busty breakbeats keep you awake. The horizon is hazy, yet the subtle swing is so clear. A whole new world lies yonder, come out and play, says Tum. More is coming, says Mr. Mencke, just wait for it.


The second production and the EP’s name carrier does not take any shortcuts. Mataka’s groove kicks in straight away. Little joyful bells enlighten the darkness. The moment you think Mataka can’t take you any deeper, Mataka erupts. Heroically it lets you know the battle is won,  Mataka made its mark, it's invincible. The shout of the Maori warrior after victory: Mataka!


In Mataka's remix, the atmospheric pad lets you float through the sky. Dreamy tickling bells are covered by a broad, open, wide sound. It triggers, lifts, it excites. Alice in Wonderland’s clock guides, the inception like dark is put against an angel’s voice kicking in. The voice is like a flower sprouting in spring after a long dark winter. Mataka’s interpretation by label honcho’s unders & Noraj Cue brings depth, it inspires and adds adventure.
