In the front or back yard of my house each morning while I drink coffee, that’s when I do most of my listening.

A well done highpass filter, I don’t always nail it…

What is your favorite party/collective where you reside and why?

Can’t pick one as everyone offers their own flavour. Fruit Bowl, Umami, Translate, Pure Space, General Merchant, Douglas St, DUNJ, Alien, Honey Point, Unsung, Athletica, Brighter Days, Heavenly, Headroom, Eureka, Nectar, Vibe Positive, Boof and Jazz Wednesdays (lol) are just off the top of my head. The list goes on! Lots of passionate people here doing great things.

What is your most recent favorite DJ mix and why?

The mix by Gi Gi on Motion Ward is definitely my favourite and most played mix of the year. The whole thing flows so well and the selections have a really beautiful cohesion within the textures and sounds. All of the blends are incredible and the second half will bring a tear to your eye.

Any advice to upcoming DJs/producers?

Explore the things you love the most, progression will be much easier and faster this way. Showing your passion and support within your local scene will present you with opportunities and being prepared will help you utilise those opportunities to create more.

Favorite BPM and why?

130bpm is my favorite. For the styles of music that I DJ most of the time it seems to cover the widest range of styles. It has a lot of energy but enough space to focus on the accents and space. It also sounds good in non dance music. It’s a weird one because even though I can say pretty confidently that 130 is my favourite, when I was prepping for a wedding gig one day I realised that BPM has a very minor effect on the energy of a tune and it’s really all about the production.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Hi Gi Gi! Recently Gi Gi released this amazing new album on Index Records. This mix is made to accompany that release, and it wholehearted hit some of the same moods textures as on the record.
We came in touch with Gi Gi’s sound through this gorgeous cassette on Quiet Time Tapes, followed by the one on Good Morning Tapes. Check them both. This mix is like the shimmering of the sunshine after a rainy day. Triphop & broken RnB into the periphery of your dreams.

"I wanted to craft something polyrhythmic and groovey while focusing on the idea of stretching time and slowing things down. I’ve been loving the resurgence of funky hard groove techno and wanted to make a mix with this sound in mind while slowing down a lot of the tracks (by 10/15 bpm at least). In general, I’ve been enjoying a s lower and more considered pace in my life and this mix has a bit of that. Stretched out rhythms with the long mix."

For the summer installment of our mix series, we’re thrilled to share a special live recording from our Gradient campout with PrintShop this April by DJ and friend Kaleb Marshall  . 

Kaleb soundtracked the early afternoon hours in the high desert with a superb blend of atmospheric downtempo and psychedellic, trip-hop leaning electronica. We rarely, if ever, get to hear sets like this out on a big system ~ it was an absolute delight and standout memory.

Kaleb Marshall  - @ergot88 - is a Los Angeles based DJ & artist with an atmospheric, eclectic & percussive sound that we were excited to get in the fold. You can catch him play out on occasion at Homage, Tuff Shed, PrintShop, and other local favorite happenings. 

  We'll be releasing info later this year about our 2024 plans for Gradient campout with PrintShop, follow @gradientcampout on IG for more.
