Cree Hunters found a stag, trapped in the lake ice.
Its antlers catching hold and saving his life
The mercy kill, started just before dawn
ice gave away, and seven hunters were gone.

The stag now freed,  hooves cracking ice in dawn's light, 
A fissure cut showing the stags hurried flight. 
The hunter's spirits calling from the water below, 
Their voices rising through the cold prairie snow.

Come back to grandmother, she will comfort you. 
Days have been long, your fight now through. 
Her arms are the shelter, Her voice a campfire song, 
Come back to grandmother, where your spirits belong.

Women and their young stood on the shore
could only watch, couldn't do anything more.
Elders called this a place of sustenance and pain.

It runs like a scar reminding us what we lacked. 
The lake a reminder of life's sorrow and pain, 
Yet grandmother waits with her song to sustain.
