C2014 - 02

This one dates from 2006.  The date is easy to remember since it is in Wikipedia.  September 13th 2006.  The Dawson College shooting in Montreal.  It could have been any other at any other place.  That evening I made this and almost uploaded it on the killer's web page which was still active at that time, to share the feelings to anyone touched by this. It is about sadness, expressed against a busy backdrop of events.

This one basically 'happened'.  Relaxed, light feeling.

The chords were found the evening before. The next evening a drum loop was set, the chords were played, and from there the solo line and bass just came to be.  This is very close to a 'one shot', although not one.  I think I fiddled the solo line in parts 2 times.  The bass also.  Keyboard is very close to an electric piano and has a supportive role.  Couldn't resist to add a bit of synthesized sound, so there's a tiny bit, during the chorus.

Ah, and a backdrop of smooth rain from Freesound was laid across.

Mostly acoustic then.  Two guitars, one acoustic bass guitar.  Drums are congas and bass drum, tiny bit of cymbal.  

Not reworked, apart from mixing adjustments.  Sometimes I fear to reworked that kind of music.  Not inclined to rework because of the calculations that it would introduce to what basically has happened.

But then, the art is also about balancing gracefully inspiration and technique, with the former always, hopefully, driving.


C2016-14

This is also a laid back piece, this time mostly using synthesis, with a bit of acoustic guitar.

C2016-15

This improv is built around a percussion loop to which a synth adds basic chordal colors.  Guitars, vibraphone, bass drum, snare, strange metallic sounds, and a Wavedrum solo, find their way.

This one is a "one synth" type of thing, although with some drums and percussion.  It features a theme followed by two solos.  A total
improvisation done rather quickly although some time was spent mixing it, with several iterations evaluated over 2 weeks. The synth is u-he's Hive. I yet do not make sounds and so I thank
people out there who are so creative in creating patches - for me it
is still some kind of magic.

This piece is built around an acoustic guitar improvisation laid over
a drum riff.  Various sounds swishes around amongst phaser cymbals
while a lead ethnic synth of future tribal times tells a story of not
so quiet times floating over a loose and dirty bass.

The title for this one is from one of the presets included in the new Repro-1 synth.  There is no political statement but if you insist... there might be a general statement about the blah-blah talk with the piece ending appropriately with an ACE synth sound called 'In the Oubliette', in the dungeon if you wish :)  This said, I do not favor any of the - for all practical purposes - only two candidates.

This is a smooth travel from water to land and back to water.  The sonic 'waves' could be representing water waves or perhaps whales. This one brings back acoustic guitar in the sonic palette.

This piece was made using u-he synthesizers that are freely available:  many instances of the TyrellN6, Beatzille, Triplecheese, Podolski and Zebralette synths, with stock sound patches.

Interlude1

This is an improv based on some sound from the Xebra soundset by Corin Neff for the Zebra2 synthesizer.  As I got the update a few days ago, the first sound I played was the bass sound and the riff that I played.  I liked the sound, so I recorded it.  Then I added a few more synth ambient tracks.  I grabbed the guitar and played along.  This was nice but it needed some solo instrument.  I found one in Xebra and then found the other in another Corin Neff soundset, 'Zebra Orchestra'.  Drums and some percussion round up the improvisation. Done in Bitwig then exported and mixed in Harrison Mixbus32C.  Then exported as stereo track and reloaded in Mixbus32C for 'mastering'. All on Linux.

Oneiric : of or relating to dreams.

'Oneiric 1' is like a story out of a dream where logic is distorted although some unconscious thread weaves them in and out as if responding to some kind of continuity.  This is not an abstract piece, though.  It mimicks quite well what is found in reality, drums, basses, leads, but seems to tell a story whose plot will never be known.

This is not a love song.  It's not a soothing song.  Although it's colorful in its own way.

Oneiric-1

This is a fast-paced 'organic techno' (of sorts) synth track.

Too Late for Goodbyes ?

Basically created with the limitation of using only the u-he ACE synth but then the Bazille synth also has some contribution in two tracks.  The bass is ACE 'Color of Chloe' preset, with appropriate mixing-time adjustments.  Also created as a mixing exercise.  This is a short song-like piece with a simple bright theme.

Musace

This piece marks the return of the acoustic guitar.  This is a bright,
almost airy in its tones, rhytmic piece.  Easy listening ?  I do not
know, but it surely flows by nicely.  Synths open and closes the piece while the theme is played on xylophone and cimbalon (Pianoteq).  No mysteries here, no melancholy, just bright and open.

A song-snapshot of a journey across the tundra. 2 acoustic guitars sharing the lead ostinato. With acoustic bass guitar and drums marking the steps and synths coloring the landscape.   And an oasis in sight.

Escape of the Hopping Rhinos

A smooth base of arpeggiated synths upon which are expressions of
a violin and saxophone.  It is largely improvisation-based and
during its 8 minutes, smoothly moves its coloration.  An ambient piece but still one that has movement.

Update: a new version was uploaded (October 29th 2018) that observes better the ambient nature of the piece while still keeping a 'biting edge' so to speak.

This is a slow somber piece with some voices, oboe, cello and waves of noise.
New version December 6th 2018: rebalanced drums and a more enveloping bass for the slow rhythm.

A rather relaxing piece, although in a weird way somewhat.  Done with all due respect to the Realm of the Otters.

Face Value

This is a slow, relaxed piece in two parts, with a piano solo as the second part. It's based on a slow pulse, like a breathing, that opens the piece. Over this breathing percussion populates some silences while the guitar 'dances' over it, augmenting the base rhythm. It's a bit like three layers of rhythm, in a way. Like a basic pulse giving birth to more details.
