Erykah Badu - Southern Gul (Nonagon remix)

A commissioned composition for Los Angeles-based Tommy Evan Lee's choreographic reinterpretation of "The Spanish Dance" from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker". The piece and associated choreography appeared in the LA Unbound dance company's "Nutcracker Unbound" in December 2011.

I created this reinterpretation of the original score based on the meter, tempo, and cues of Tommy's choreography. The lead-in and lead-out were specifically requested by Tommy, but otherwise the primary criteria for this version were:

1. The piece had to include some recognizable elements of the original score.
2. The dynamics of the music needed to reinforce but not overwhelm the sounds of the dancers' fans, a central feature of the choreography.

A short piece produced on-spec for a Persol Eyewear advertisement in 2011.

Prompt from the producer:

"We are looking for something that has a driving tempo but with moments of dips and to finish with a crescendo. The theme behind the film is "exhaustion through perfection." There are subtle themes we are trying to convey but all the while maintaining an artistic yet playful approach to the idea of polishing sunglasses. We are planning to choreograph dancers to the track we are trying to create. We envision the dance to be abstract, playful and physical."
