Cobblestone Jazz are back from a three year hiatus with a sunrise ready number on Itiswhatitis Recordings. “Northern Lights” is a sparse beautiful number with modular synth blups reverberating into each other, never quite rounding a full melody. As with their early 2000s releases, the Canadians continue to show they have a broad range and we’re very much looking forward to more from them.

Everything we knew about live House & Techno was completely blown away during this set as Rodriguez Jr. gave us the performance of a life time. Described by him as "One of the best parties he's ever played", the vibe was on another level, the music was through the roof, and his performance had everyone in a musical frenzy. We all had a feeling that Rodriguez Jr. was going to be the highlight of our Desert Hearts Spring Festival, but we had no idea that he was about to set the bar for every DJ & Performer at our festival moving forward. DJ Shiva brings her Noncompliant alias to Valence in March 2017 with the More Than Surviving EP. Described by longtime friend & fan The Black Madonna as "one of the most exciting producers in techno", Shiva's Noncompliant alias is as defiant in sound as it is in name. 

Leading with the title track, which featured in The Black Madonna's Mixmag cover mix in January 2017, the EP features two more original tracks, informed by Alan Moore's V For Vendetta and poet Adrienne Rich respectively. Valence label head Kevin McHugh completes the package with an Ambivalent remix.

"Noncompliant is about daring to be who you are instead of who others expect you to be, even when (and maybe especially when) being yourself is dangerous. It is a name and a project very much based in queerness and feminism, and though I started the project last year, it has become even more relevant to me now that we are living in the Trump regime. 

"More Than Surviving is about how we live in times of crisis. We have to find joy and love and goodness even when we are fighting to survive. In fact, sometimes those are the things that keep us fighting, that make it worth fighting in the first place. 

"The Very Last Inch of Us is based on a quote from V for Vendetta: 'Our integrity sells for so little, but it is all we really have. It is the very last inch of us. But within that inch we are free.' Once again, being true to ourselves is sometimes all we have, and it's worth fighting for. 

"More Howl, More Keening is from an Adrienne Rich poem about death. We all will deal with loss, both in the fights we have and also of the people we love. When we lose either, we have to approach it with as much passion as we do living."

Special Request joins forces with Nina Kraviz and Anastasia Kristensen, shattering the doors of perception over a four-track EP. ‘Through The Looking Glass’ drops 27th July on Houndstooth.

On the A side, Nina Kraviz provides two interpretations of ‘Curtain Twitcher’. ‘Alice Was Here Remix’ takes the intensity of the original and boils it into a 4/4 spin of frenzied basslines and distorted acoustics, punctuated by her languid reading of the Mad Hatter. For the ‘Samba Remix’, syncopated polyrhythms take charge of a fragmented melody.

Opening the AA side, ‘Looking Glass’ lures you down the rabbit hole with mysterious bleeps, only to reveal a whirlwind of stormy breaks and junglist percussion. Closing off the trip, Anastasia Kristensen’s remix of ‘Tiresias’ marches its way through a field of swollen bass and glitchy percussion.

Radio Slave’s R-Time returns with three unreleased Fabrice Lig productions from the vaults spanning over two decades.

Scanning through his discography, Fabrice Lig’s reputation for producing some of house and techno’s most brilliant music is indisputable. R&S, Subject Detroit, Planet E, F-Communications, Versatile, KMS... these are only a handful of respected labels which the Belgian artist has released on. Lig now joins Matt Edwards’ prestigious vinyl reissue label with three never-released tracks showcasing a sound and style that have withstood the test of time.

‘The Meeting’ is the most recent track on the package, delivering glorious enveloping plucks over shining string chords before Lig’s signature funky melodies glide amidst jazzy cymbal rides.

On the flip, ‘Nebula 101’ is a retro minimal track recorded in 2015 featuring a wonky rhythm, Shruti synth bass and piercing Roland Sh101 stabs until the high octane ‘Noise Revolt’, which was recorded in 1995, concludes the package with thundering 909 drums, echoing snares and relentless Sh101 synths.

Raised in small-town Indiana on a musical diet of 80s synth pop and punk rock, Noncompliant soon found barnyard raves and warehouse techno parties and (as DJ Shiva) quickly became a fixture of the fabled 90s Midwest USA rave scene.

Now, almost three decades and a name change later, she is at the top of her techno game. She was recognized as one of Mixmag's Top 20 Breakthrough DJs in 2017 and has performed at renowned venues like Berghain and Tresor in Berlin, Smartbar in Chicago, and DeSchool in Amsterdam. She has also appeared at festivals such as Unsound and Movement Detroit. 

Noncompliant's releases and remixes on labels like Valence, Flash, Outerworld, and Dark Entries have made waves in the global music scene, with her track "Women's Work" even landing on Fiedel's official Berghain 08 mix and his label Fiedeltwo. In 2023, she is launching her own label called Giant Arm, which features her signature style of raw, uncompromising techno. 

At her core, Noncompliant is a die-hard techno fan with a deep love for music and a drive to continue honing her craft as a DJ and producer to share her favorite music with people on dance floors around the world.
