Field Kit is the debut album from Field Kit, the Berlin based musical collective led by German violinist and composer Hannah von Hübbenet. For the composition and production Hannah has collaborated with Berlin based pianist and producer John Guertler. 
Their Debut Album is of original compositions by Hannah and John, arranged for a subtle mix of warm acoustic and cold mechanical sounds and instruments, at times delicately blended and at others set in sharp contrast. The deft retro futurism brings to mind the films of Tarkovsky and Fritz Lang, images of the future rooted in the past, a cyber-noir soundtrack to modern day dystopia. The level of sophistication in the production and composition finds Hannah and John in a unique sonic space, alongside touchstones of classic, early 20th Century artists such as Iannis Xenakis and Edgar Varèse more contemporary voices such as Oneohtrix Point Never and Mica Levi come to mind. 

Having both studied music at the Universität der Künste Berlin before going on to study film composition at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, the duo of Hannah and John is a formidable meeting of musical minds, with both now being acclaimed composers in their own right, with multiple awards to their names. 

Nonostar Records is artistically led by celebrated violinist, composer and producer Alex Stolze, and has released Alex’s solo output alongside work from his trio Solo Collective with cellist Anne Müller and pianist Sebastian Reynolds as well as the work of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ben Osborn.

The Studies are a transdisciplinary artistic project; at once a performance piece, a work of video art, an E.P. of poetic pop songs and a series of lectures. Overlaid archive films act as a visualisation of the music, while a lecture - a mixture of spoken language and singing - takes place and is filmed and recorded. While the textual content is poetically transformed and conveyed through singing, a similar process occurs with the film material. By taking the footage out of context and adapting it to the rhythm of the language in correlation with a new context, many reactions between film language and pop culture language can be discovered and played with. The archive becomes, rather than a cliché, a simulacra that leaves a trail as it enters into foreign territory, leading to processing and understanding of subliminal information. The dangerous glare of iconisation, of the powerful star individual, is refracted as in a prism, in what is in fact a collective and cooperatively imagined and created work. These "studies" focus on the main themes of pop culture: society, identity and love - drawing on both a deeply personal first-person narrative and wider, analytical and self-critical gaze.

Andulasian rapper and songwriter Palo G presents deeply soulful new single Till You Love Yourself - a love song that’s as much a song of self-love and self-empowerment as it is an expression of romantic love. Driven by a minimal yet driving hip hop groove and an arrangement built of delicately layered acoustic instrumentation, the song is the outcome of a fertile creative partnership with producer Alex Stolze and his label, Nonostar Records, who are releasing the track.

Driven by rhythmic acoustic guitar, a stripped-back drum machine beat and raw, rhythmic bursts of cello reminiscent of Arthur Russell, Till You Love Yourself offers an infectious groove to support Palo’s intimate vocal performance and lyrical innovations. On one level the track is a beautifully understated love song to a woman - girl, just know that I want you good - but one that carries a powerful message. While love songs are often dominated by heteronormative narratives, objectification and projection, Palo’s approach is to search for a radical new take on love: one built on equality and self-love as well as romance. Since I’m with you, I’m with me, sings Palo’s poignant vocal: a portrayal of love that’s refreshingly free of cliché or convention, reflecting the importance of loving oneself in a world that often fails to value self-love. “The world we live in makes it hard to love ourselves,” she explains, “we have to fit into unwanted standards, be accepted by a society we never chose to belong to.”

The video, created by artist collective Cargo Cult and directed by Andrea Huyoff, offers a behind the scenes peek at Palo G’s elegant sartorial “gentlewoman” persona. Somewhere between a costume fitting and a theatrical performance, it shows an intimate portrait of an artist backstage, loaded with symbolic imagery and poetic expression.

Alex Stolze -  Cell to Cell

Solo Collective is a new ensemble comprised of German chamber musicians Alex Stolze (violin) and Anne Müller (cello), with British pianist and producer Sebastian Reynolds. Conceptually, the trio present themselves as a rotating cast of three soloists who take turns in the spotlight, with the other two providing supporting roles.

Solo Collective met through the Berlin music scene in 2016. Firstly Sebastian met Anne, who collaborated on Sebastian’s track Holy Island, which features on the record. The three then made their debut performances at sold out concerts in Berlin and Hannover in February 2017, and will be releasing their debut record, Part One, via Alex’s Nonostar Records. Following the success of these first performances in Germany, the trio will tour the UK this September and November.
 
The three musicians are all well established in their own right. Alex Stolze rose to European fame with his band Bodi Bill, who had a string of chart hits in Germany, and as a member of the internationally renowned modern jazz ensemble Dictaphone (Denovali Records). Alex has a long history with the Berlin techno scene since, including co-founding Krakatau records. He is currently finishing the follow-up to his 2016 debut solo record, Mankind Animal. 
 
Having previously spent many years touring and recording with Agnes Obel, Anne Müller is also well known as a long-term musical partner of Nils Frahm. Anne collaborated with Nils on many of his projects, including 2011’s 7fingers and the 2015 soundtrack for the motion picture Victoria, which won ‘Best Film Score’ at the German Film Awards. More recently Anne has been working with Nils’ Erased Tapes label mate Ben Lukas Boysen, and is making plans to release her debut solo album. 
 
Sebastian Reynolds is a lynchpin of the UK experimental/alternative music scene, having led cult ensembles Keyboard Choir and Braindead Collective, as well as playing sax for The War On Drugs and working on recordings with former Slit Viv Albertine . In addition to the Solo Collective collaboration, Sebastian continues to operate as a solo artist, and is working on commissions to create scores for two contemporary dance works – the Thai-inspired Mahajanaka and Puzzle Creature – in collaboration with Neon Dance Company, known for their choreography/dance pieces which have featured scores by the likes of Nils Frahm, Efterklang and Peter Broderick. 
 
Part One is strikingly coherent as a listening experience, moving between sonorous string ensemble composition, abrasive electronic textures, processed vocals and atmospheric, evocative piano.

Ben Osborn is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Berlin, Germany, and originally from Oxford, UK. Fast Awake is Ben’s debut single on Nonostar Records, the label founded by German experimental violinist and producer Alex Stolze. 
Fast Awake is a sophisticatedly woven mix of prepared piano, stuttering percussion and processed strings which blend seamlessly to create a unique and beguiling sound world. 
“Everything’s changing so why can’t you change? Everything’s strange here and you are a stranger”, the lyrics articulate the feeling of living in a world that is ever shifting, often in an overwhelmingly rapid manner. Fast Awake has a dark underlying subtext, juxtaposing its themes of disorientation and anxiety with musical material built of complex, shifting harmonies, polyrhythmic beats and Alex Stolze’s shimmering, haunting violin melodies. 
Ben is the latest artist to join the Nonostar roster, which has also seen the release of Alex Stolze’s acclaimed solo albums Mankind Animal and Outermost Edge, Solo Collective Part One, the highly praised debut release from the modern classical trio of Alex Stolze with cellist Anne Müller and pianist/producer Sebastian Reynolds. Field Kit ​- the musical collective centred on the violinist and composer ​Hannah von Hübbenet​ - continue a journey through musical distinctions and distinctiveness with ​Downward Rising​. While Hübbenet’s film scores might have laid the foundation for her sound, ​Field Kit ​brings the music to the forefront - showcasing a unique and dynamic compositional voice that has its own conceptual grounding; no longer an underscore, but rather a fully realised listening experience.
That’s not to say that the cinematic has no place in ​Downward Rising​; it’s a piece that invites a narrative interpretation. Its interchange of warm acoustic and cold mechanical sound is at times blended and at others contrasting; earthy, melancholic strings are framed by shimmering harmonics, giving way to thick synthesiser glissandi reminiscent of an air raid siren. The combination of retro and futuristic brings to mind the films of ​Tarkovsky ​or ​Fritz Lang ​- an image of the future that’s itself rooted in the past, a cyber-noir soundtrack to our own dystopian moment. It may draw comparisons to ​Oneohtrix Point Never ​and ​Mica Levi, ​but it also represents the forming of Field Kit’s own individual voice.
The video to ​Downward Rising​ takes the combination of retro and futuristic further. Phantasmic stock footage appears and disappears, overlaid with cryptic images in contrasting visual qualities. The flickering film style is at times reminiscent of ​Jonas Mekas ​- albeit with a more apocalyptic sensibility - and the overall effect is perhaps closer to the collaborations of ​Philip Glass and Godfrey Reggio​’s ​Qatsi ​trilogy: imagistic silent film, driven by an imposing minimalist score.
