Unveiling The Secret - The Roots Of Trance

Name: عين (Ayn)
Alias: فناء‎  (fana)/ @fanafellahin
Pronouns: They/them
Location: Cleveland, OH (originally from NYC)

Influences: My chosen family, my ancestors, my enemies.

Affiliations/Residencies: Resident DJ & co-founder of Disco Paradiso
Projects: hivelike is a multi-media project that I had been DJing and writing music under from June, 2016 until now. I wanted this project to represent the mosaic that I am as an individual, as well as my relationship to the Jungian concept of the Collective Consciousness. hivelike is set to release a self-titled EP in early 2018 on Mistake By The Lake Records. My current project, فناء (written “fana”), is a reflection of my faith as a Sufi Muslim, my heritage as a Pan-Mediterranean Arab Kurd, my identity as a nonbinary queer person, and my inner and outer conflicts as someone who is of mixed race. فناء will be releasing material in mid-2018 on Crisis Urbana.

Favorite Quote: “All the world will be your enemy, prince with a thousand enemies. And whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.”

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: For every Abdulla Rashim there are countless DJs, musicians, artists of color whose voice matters exponentially more than that of the white cishet men who seemingly run the scene. If you don't think you're heard, I hear you; if you don't think you're seen, I see you. Do the same for your fellow musicians, artists, DJs who are queer and of color. Be there for each other because we are all we have. In the words of a good friend of mine, “Don't let white people tear us apart.”
