My next piece is the theme song from the movie Requiem for a dream. Now this piece has a pretty interesting history. So let me take you through it. Yes you’ve to learn something before you get to listen to my songs :P .

Requiem is generally used in the context of a Requiem Mass, meaning a Mass (Church Mass) for the dead.

Now going back in history, around 1791, there was a brilliant composer and musician by the name Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, or Mozart :P . The count Franz von Walsegg commissioned Mozart to create a Requiem through a lot of agents, supposedly to take the work and call it as his own among his audience. Mozart was already very sick at that time. Even with his sickness, the genius composed the first movement of the song called the Requiem aeternam before he passed away! The count was willing to pay only half the money since only part of the work was completed. Hence his Widow approached other composers to help her out in finishing Mozart’s work. Joseph von Eybler, Franz Xaver Süssmayr and Maximilian Stadler and many others helped complete the song that has hence been called Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor.

Zoning back to our times, Clint Mansell, a famous Music composer decided to take Mozart’s Requiem as an inspiration and compose a Requiem named Lux Aeterna. This was orchestrated in many places like the title song for Requiem for a dream and in Lord of the Rings and so on.

The song itself is incredible powerful. This might be because of the fact that Death in itself is a very powerful entity in human minds. The original song is orchestrated. I’ve tried to capture the orchestration and the song’s mood into a piano cover. Just as usual, be my guest and let me know how I’ve done.

With over thirty years of professional music experience as a recitalist and concerto soloist, Michael Ward is a pianist of outstanding gifts.  In possession of a prodigious virtuoso technique, deep music insight and thorough understanding of all the music he performs,  Michael is in total command of his art and he uses all his considerable musical and pianistic skills to communicate the music he plays in a sincere and genuine manner to every member of his audience. 

Michael gave his first public piano recital aged 9 and after a period of study with the celebrated pianist Danielle Salamon he won the International Fritz Gottlieb Memorial Scholarship for excellence in piano performance which resulted in two years study in London with Vera Yelverton.  During this time he was offered recitals and concerto performances throughout the UK and consequently Michael was invited to study the piano works of Franz Liszt privately with the famous Hungarian concert pianist Louis Kentner. 

Throughout his career, in addition to his concert activities as a soloist,  Michael's skills as a piano accompanist and chamber musician have been much sought after by countless instrumentalists,  singers and chamber ensembles in music from Baroque to the present day.  As a consequence,  in all three roles Michael has amassed a vast repertoire and he has given concerts throughout the world in many of the most prestigious venues as well as making numerous commercial recordings and playing for both Radio and Television broadcasts in the UK and abroad.

An innate sense of phrasing, articulation and presentation distinguishes all his performances and lends all his concerts a real sense of occasion.  It is a rare privilege to meet such a distinguished and unpretentious musician. I have always admired Michael’s commitment to music and he continues to inspire those with whom he comes into contact.’
