Improvisation for clarinet

In honour of Heinz Bohlen's 80th birthday I made this little project. My Australian penpal, composer Reilly Smethurst in Brisbane, inspired me to try it out.

Olivier Messiaen can in a way be considered an early non-octave composer. Though his harmonies and modes are clearly octave-based, his melodic motives are not. Messiaen avoids octave repetition in his melodies - especially the bird-like ones - and hardly ever uses the perfect fifth. Instead, he prefers the tritone as a substitute for the fifth and all kinds of sevenths and ninths. What's closer than reworking his "Abîme des oiseaux" from Quatuor pour la fin du temps as a piece for solo Bohlen-Pierce clarinet and accompanying bird choir?

Serendipity

This is a one minute composition for two clarinets using the Carlos alpha scale. I dare to say it is the first ever clarinet composition in Carlos alpha (I am not counting my improvisations). Carlos alpha can more or less comfortly be played on a Bohlen-Pierce clarinet, using special fingerings.

Roxy autoconfig was formed by Nora-Louise Müller (clarinet) and Todd Harrop (percussion, electronics) in 2011. The band specializes in the Bohlen–Pierce 'macro-tonal' scale with custom-made instruments. Independently, the musicians have a solid background playing experimental, classical and jazz concerts across Europe and Canada, e.g. at festivals in Hamburg and in musique actuelle clubs in Montreal.
