You can hear, in the songs of No Regular Play, hints at the sounds that inspired the duo to make music in the first place, and sonic whispers of the vast musical lexicon they share. Friends since the age of eight, Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn grew up listening to Native Tongues and underground hip-hop and jazz. That love of music never waned: the two traveled to Cuba together to study Afro-Cuban music and Paulus formally studied classical and jazz and toured with the band Beirut. That explains, then, why their output since they began releasing music in 2008 – mostly as part of the Wolf+Lamb collective – has so effectively married diverse sonic influences with smooth house. Nothing Less, their debut release on the HAKT label, very nearly glides through its four songs, bringing along elements and instruments give this release depth, richness and texture. 

On “Nothing Less,” the opener, Paulus plays trumpet against a backbeat that’s suddenly surrounded by cosmic synths and his own Prince-reminiscent vocals. Track two, “Night Ranger,” feels like an ‘80s summer night, with keys forming elegant patterns beneath Paulus’s vocals and sparse, mournful horns. “Ice Cold Bottle” toys with synthy funk, and fills out with murky keys, thumping beats and lyrics that are smirkily, playfully sleazy (And includes maybe the best lyric of late: “Don't bother with the bathing suit/’Cause that suit will drop.”) And “Indigo,” which starts off with stacks of handclaps and big bottomed bass, unexpectedly weaves in swooning cello and string swells that feel hopelessly romantic.

Guy Gerbers Supplement Facts imprint continues to drop the bombs, this time courtesy of Brooklyn-based duo No Regular Play, with their searing package Fall Up To The Sky featuring the molten vocals of Maya Hatch and a blinding remix from Life and Death. The EP came about after label head Guy Gerber heard a recording of an NRP live set at an after party and was struck by one particular synth line, so much so that he contacted the pair shortly after to discuss a release. A prevailing musical connection on both sides made Supplement Facts the natural destination for Lookin - a track four years in the making. Having been a staple of the NRP live set through multiple reincarnations, the final version (built around the original synth line) was made especially for Supplement Facts and now features the vocals of Nicks cousin, Maya Hatch, who delivers the perfect female response to Gregs original musings. In Fall Up To The Sky, Mayas luscious voice infiltrates deep alongside warm gliding synth pads and the techy drive of the kicks craft a tight swinging groove. Lookin carries the trademark NRP lilt thats laidback and bumping in equal measure. Idiosyncratic purrs, human and discoid, dapple the kicking groove and Gregs sultry sleaze is the perfect playmate for the moody, strutting bassline. When the oscillating synth finally impacts its a streak of rave gold in the tracks armour. Life and Death turn in a stunning rework of Lookin in which Gregs vocal is toned down to a melancholy murmur and the emotive chords sweep over the bouncing bassline and crisp percussive beats. Shrouded in mystery and the subject of much acclaim in electronic music circles, the band and label Life and Death is the creative project that keeps on giving, responsible for some of 2011s most innovative music. Greg Paulus and Nick DeBryn met in Minnesota aged 8 and have been bonded by a mutual study and appreciation for a wide spectrum of sounds ever since. Inaugurated at the legendary Marcy Hotel, home to the Wolf + Lamb family, a melting pot of musical influences ultimately boiled down to No Regular Play. The NRP evolution continues with the near completion of an orchestra piece for the Minnesota Orchestra and the duo are preparing to release their debut album in 2012.

Cameo was one of our favorite Brooklyn clubs that regrettably closed just over a year ago. For our last hurrah there we did a two night residency that we recorded with the intent of making a live record. This was the first night and there was truly magic in the air. We were incredibly lucky to have our favorite musicians John Camp, Jake Saslow and Bram Kincheloe join us. It's our best recording to date. We could not have done it without the impeccable front of house sound engineering of Brendon Clark. We then gave the recording to Dave Robertson AKA Cameo Culture to master and he did an amazing job! Big hugs and thanks to the entire Cameo staff and, especially, boss man Jify Shah who created so many magical nights there for our entire community.

Two tracks made at a time that defined their music development ... searching beneath the machines and software and influences that give a band a voice ..... here are the voices of exploration for all to hear. Nick and Greg are childhood friends from Minneapolis who relocated to New York to pursue their love for music. An interpretation of 'rain (all day)' premiered in September 12, 2011, as part of 'TimePiece', a large-scale work composed by Greg and his father Stephen Paulus and performed by the Minnesota Orchestra as part of the opening program of the Orchestra's 109th season. The piece received much acclaim will be commissioned for future performances in the USA.

Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn AKA No Regular Play met as eight year olds growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and after exploring music in ranging genres throughout their younger years, formed No Regular Play in 2008 when they met Zav and Gadi in Brooklyn. The pairing have been heavily involved with Wolf + Lamb ever since, contributing to the collective's supreme musical output with a string of releases and breath taking live shows, incorporating live trumpet played by Greg. Their Louche podcast is an exquisite listen: full of sensual vocals and chords, its no wonder they are held in such high esteem in the Wolf + Lamb camp. Check this one out, it's a hotty.

"Scanning the airwaves for their early influences and inspirations, the Brooklyn duo present a radio-style mix that charts their diverse musical background - flipping between Madlib and Miles Davis, Battles and Bjork.

Both accomplished musicians in their own right, Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn flirted with various genres and musical forms before falling in love with the innovative electronic music championed by Wolf + Lamb.

Friends since the age of 8, the pair were first influenced by iconic jazz and hip-hops acts in the vein of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Miles Davis. Dedicated to music, Greg started playing trumpet at local jazz clubs in his teenage years and together the pair travelled to Cuba's Havana to study Afro-Cuban rhythm, music and culture. 

Around 2008, the duo met Wolf + Lamb founders Zev and Gadi, and immediately began a fruitful musical and personal relationship. No Regular Play was the result and now the group's first album, Endangered Species, has been released to much acclaim.

Taking them right back to their musical roots, this is what the guys had to say about their mix:

'This is the first mix in a series we hope to continue called, Inspirado Radio. The idea was to include music that we listened to while growing up that really inspired us and shaped our collective musical taste and style before we started producing on our own. 

'We wanted to include many different genres of music, so we thought we would make the mix sound as if you're tuning through the radio and landing on different stations: jazz, hip-hop, oldies, college radio, etc. This also gave us a chance to do some fun radio drops :)
